College Roundup: UCI’s Sicard on to NCAA Championships

NCAA West prelims

LAWRENCE, Kan. — UC Irvine junior Lloyd Sicard earned his second straight trip to Eugene, Ore., and the NCAA Championships following his performance Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Sicard won his heat and finished third overall in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.61 seconds, just off his school record of 13.60 he set a year ago.

He will compete in the NCAA semifinals June 8 at 5:32 p.m. at Hayward Field. The final is scheduled for June 10 at 6:12 p.m.

Sicard, the 2016 Big West Conference Co-Athlete of the Year in men’s track, was making his third consecutive appearance in the NCAA West Prelims this week.

Also on Saturday in Lawrence, UCI junior Matt Seawright placed 29th in the discus throw with a mark of 171 feet, 10 inches at Rock Chalk Park.

NAIA Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Vanguard University freshman Winston Lawson finished third in the decathlon, completed Saturday.

Lawson, who was second after the five-event first day on Friday, wound up with 6,801 points, well behind victorious Kale Wolden (7,830).

Lawson’s high jump mark of 6 feet, 63/4 inches topped the field and his 400-meter time of 50.83 was third best.

He was fourth-best among decathletes in the 100 in 11.28 and the 110 high hurdles (15.09), and ranked sixth in the long jump (21-31/2 ), seventh in the discus (114-6, eighth in the shot put (36-61/2 ) and ninth in the pole vault (12-71/2 ).

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

NCAA West prelims

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Five UC Irvine athletes concluded their season on Saturday.

The 4x100 relay of Taisyn Crutchfield, Megan George, Michelle Norman and Persis William-Mensah, an Estancia High product, finished 20th in 45.71 seconds.

The relay broke the school record four times this season, its best a mark of 44.51 in winning the Big West Conference title on May 14.

George, two-time conference champion in the 100-meter hurdles, finished 23rd in the event (13.51).

Freshman Barbara Coward was 36th in the discus (154 feet, 9 inches).
