College Roundup: Vanguard baseball season ends

LEWISTON, Idaho — The most successful season in Vanguard history came to a close on Monday at the NAIA World Series at Lewis-Clark State College.
The Lions (39-21) rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 10-7 to pull even, 10-10, on a two-run home run by Brock Eismann in the top of the eighth inning, but Florida-based St. Thomas (47-16), scored four in the home half of the eighth to prevail and advance in the double-elimination tournament.
David Stone was three for five with two doubles, two runs batted in and one run to pace the Lions’ 13-hit attack.
Taylor McKnight was three for five with one RBI and one run and Brett Collins was three for five with one RBI.
Paul Keating had a homer and three RBIs for Vanguard, for which Kevin Bettencourt was one for four with an RBI.
Sam Frakes took the loss to fall to 0-3 as five Vanguard errors led to five unearned runs.
The 39 wins are a single-season record for Vanguard, which made its second World Series appearance, its first in 30 years.

National championships
GAINESVILLE, Ga.— The Orange Coast College novice eight and second novice eight both won their respective events at the American Collegiate Rowing Assn. national championships, completed Sunday.
The novice eight topped the 18-school field to defend its national title and claim the crown for the third time in four years.
It was the second national championship in three years for the second novice eight boat.
OCC was ninth in the varsity four, topping the field in the consolation final with a time that would have been fifth overall on Sunday.
The Pirates’ novice lightweight four finished fourth and the varsity lightweight four was fourth.
In addition, former OCC rowers stood out for their current schools.
Former Pirate Austin Gentry helped Grand Valley State place second in the varsity eight final, while Dave Hammond helped Washington State capture a silver medal in the varsity lightweight four event.
Cody Raphael helped UC Santa Barbara finish fourth in the varsity eight event.
OCC Coach Paul Prioleau announced Tuesday that he was not a finalist for the full-time faculty position that would be offered to the Pirates’ next crew coach, ending a five-year coaching tenure with the program.
