High School Track & Field: Jim Scott Stadium will be busy

This is the time of the year for track and field athletes to perform at their best as the CIF Southern Section Preliminary Meet takes place Saturday.

There will be plenty of action and a big crowd at Jim Scott Stadium, where the Division 3 meet is held. Estancia and Costa Mesa high schools will try to deliver their best not only in competition, but also in hosting the annual meet.

This year will be a bit more challenging as parking could be a problem. Renovation and construction is at work on Estancia’s campus, particularly the same blacktop area where cars could park. But not this year. Buses will drop off athletes and park at Costa Mesa High, said Tim Parsel, the Estancia boys’ athletic director.

He says he’s ready for a fun day.

“It’s basically a dawn-to-dusk type thing,” Parsel said. “Charlie [Appell, the track coach] and I will be there and we get track kids to help us. We’ll have to set it all up and take it down. The event ends around 5 and we’re there till 7. It goes fast but it’s fun.”

For the past six years, Jim Scott Stadium has been home to the Division 3 meet. There were days long ago that rain would threaten a meet like this. But with the all-weather track, there are no problems.

“We just have to squeegee off the drains because there will be puddles there,” Parsel said. “The track looks great.”

Division 3 features Newport-Mesa schools Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa and Estancia.

Parsel estimates about 2,500 people to come to Jim Scott Stadium. The bleachers will be packed, many will be standing. More fans watch what’s going on on the track from their spot at the throwing events.

The top nine with the best marks in each field event qualify for the CIF Southern Section Championships next week at Cerritos College. In the running events, each heat winner qualifies plus the next fastest time to total nine competitors advancing to the finals.

Newport Harbor competes in Division 2 and will be at Moorpark High, while Sage Hill School is in Division 4 at Carpinteria.
