College Roundup: Vanguard men’s tennis advances to NAIA quarterfinals

MOBILE, Ala. — The No. 3-seeded Lions breezed into Thursday’s quarterfinals with the second-round triumph at the NAIA Championship tournament on Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Lions (26-1), who are playing their final season after the school announced earlier this year that the program will be disbanded, will meet No. 6-seeded Xavier of Louisiana (13-7), in the quarterfinals. It’s the seventh straight season that Vanguard, which received a first-round bye, has advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals.

Stefan Kilchhofer and Roger Muri won in singles and doubles to spearhead Wednesday’s thumping of the Kansas-based school (11-2).

Kilchhofer won 12 of 13 singles games and Muri won 12 of 14. The duo combined to post one of three doubles victories for the Lions.

Fabio Silva and Michael Rjazanov, as well as the tandem of Daymon Johnson and Filip Burnac, also won doubles matches.

The semifinals are Friday and the title match is Saturday.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 7, Glendale 1

GLENDALE — The visiting Pirates claimed the best-of-three Super Regional in the Southern California playoffs on Sunday, behind sophomore Stephen Corona.

Corona went two for four with a home run and three runs batted in and also earned the pitching victory to help OCC (25-16) advance to the best-of-three Sectional playoff at Santa Barbara City College, beginning Friday.

Corona allowed four hits and no runs in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 2-1. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

J.T. McLellan was also two for four with a homer and three RBIs for OCC, for which Tommy Bell and Jack Kruger had two hits apiece.

Glendale, which won the opening game of the series, ends its season at 21-20.

OCC, the 2014 California Community College Athletic Assn. champion, would advance to the four-team state championship tournament by winning the Sectional. The state tournament is May 23-25 in Fresno.
