Boys’ Tennis: Sage seeded No. 4 in Division 2
A late-season loss to Academy League rival Crean Lutheran did not cost the Sage Hill School boys’ tennis team a seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.
The brackets were released Monday and the Lightning are the No. 4 seed in Division 2. Sage Hill is joined by Newport Harbor (Division 1) and Estancia (Division 4) as playoff teams from the Newport-Mesa area.
Sage Hill (12-5) will play host to Servite (9-7), the No. 3 team from the Trinity League, in a Division 2 first-round playoff match Wednesday at 3 p.m. at The Tennis Club.
The Lightning shared the league title with Crean Lutheran, but earned the league’s top designation for CIF due to winning more combined sets in the teams’ two league meetings. Sage Hill is led by a strong singles lineup that includes junior Kenan Torlic and sophomores Adam Langevin and Omead Moini.
Newport Harbor (17-3) will play host to Calabasas (10-4), the second-place team from the Marmonte League, in a Division 1 first-round playoff match Wednesday at 3 p.m. Should the Sailors win, they would likely play No. 2-seeded Beverly Hills in the second round Friday.
Senior Reese Stalder, who is undefeated this season and bound for TCU, leads Newport Harbor in singles. Stalder captured the Sunset League title last week, while the doubles team of David Lee and Mark Schaefer were league finalists. Newport Harbor finished second in league to Los Alamitos, the top-seeded team in Division 1.
Estancia (6-9) will play at La Serna (14-1) in a Division 4 first-round match Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Eagles finished second in the Orange Coast League, which had just four teams in it this season as Costa Mesa and Calvary Chapel didn’t field teams.
Second-round matches in all divisions are scheduled for Friday, with quarterfinals on Monday.
