Women’s Water Polo: Gilchrist, Musselman, Kapana help Team USA win gold
Newport Beach’s Kaleigh Gilchrist, Maddie Musselman and Carlee Kapana all contributed as the U.S. senior national women’s water polo team won gold at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament on Sunday in Auckland, New Zealand.
Team USA defeated Australia, 12-10, in a shootout in the gold medal match.
Kapana, a senior at Newport Harbor High, made six saves in goal and helped hold Australia scoreless in 10 power play chances.
Gilchrist, a Newport Harbor and USC graduate, scored a goal in the shootout for Team USA, which went undefeated in the tournament. Musselman had an assist, a steal and also one exclusion drawn.
Makenzie Fischer and Kami Craig both made the all-tournament team for Team USA, which won its first gold medal at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament in team history.
Next up for the U.S. squad is the FINA World League Super Final.
