High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ lacrosse clinches league title

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 8, El Dorado 6

Brittany McCoy scored five goals as the Sailors clinched a share of their first league title in program history Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

Jordan Rausch, Darby O’Mahony and Maxine Aiello also scored for Newport Harbor (9-6, 7-1 in Century SE League). Rausch led the team with five ground balls, as the Sailors overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit.

Newport Harbor closes out the regular season at Santa Margarita on Friday.

Corona del Mar 15, Northwood 4

CdM senior defender Emily Schwartz, making her season debut after recovering from an ACL injury, had a goal and five assists in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League finale at CdM.

On senior day, seniors Mason Bendetti, Megan Rieden, Brooke Beyrooty, Maddy Goon, Julia Martin and Amy Martino also scored for CdM (10-6, 7-3 in league).

CdM awaits its seeding for the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 15, Edison 3

The Sailors clinched outright second place in the Sunset League with Thursday’s win at Newport Harbor High.

Senior Reese Stalder swept at No. 1 singles to improve to 50-0 this season. David Lee and Mark Schaefer swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in doubles, while Gavin Leonard lost just one game at No. 2 singles.

Newport Harbor (16-3, 7-2 in league) concludes league play at home against Fountain Valley on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

Beckman 12, Corona del Mar 6

Bjorn Hoffmann swept at No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match at Corona del Mar High.

CdM is 8-9, 4-5 in league. The Sea Kings need to beat Northwood at home on Monday in the league finale to be eligible for a CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff berth.

SOFTBALL

Calvary Chapel 10, Estancia 4

Estancia fell to 11-7, 3-3 in league after losing the Orange Coast League game Thursday at Estancia High.

The Eagles play at cross-town rival Costa Mesa on Tuesday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Godinez def. Estancia

The host Eagles lost an Orange Coast League match that the Grizzlies swept, 25-12, 25-19, 25-20, on Thursday.

Estancia (1-8 in league) closes out league play at Saddleback on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
