High School Roundup: CdM boys’ swim takes down Northwood

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Corona del Mar 92, Northwood 78

IRVINE — Brothers Justin and Tim Hanson both won events for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League meet on the road.

Justin won the 100-yard butterfly (21.20) and was second in the 200 IM (1:54.55). Tim won the 500 free (4:42.46) and was second in the 200 free (1:45.67).

Taylor Cortens won the 100 back (52.88) and Tyler Lin won the 100 breast (56.17) for CdM (4-1 in league).

The Sea Kings race at rival Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay on Thursday.

Estancia 128, Saddleback 41

Jason Chesemore won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events for the Eagles in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League meet.

Chesemore touched in 54.11 seconds to win the 100, and 1:58.54 to win the 200. Cobi White was another double-event winner for Estancia, capturing the 200 IM (2:19.27) and 100 backstroke (1:01.69).

Other event winners for Estancia included Kent Lim (50 free, 25.70), Gavin Kane (500 free, 5:40.66), Victor Godfrey (100 breast, 1:18.09) and Chris DeFrenza (100 fly, 1:06.53).

Estancia (5-7), which races next at Orange Coast League preliminaries Wednesday at Costa Mesa High, also won all three relays.

Calvary Chapel 86, Costa Mesa 82

Augustus Cunningham won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 58.56 seconds for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League meet at Costa Mesa High.

Angel Rosado (200 IM, 2:08.16), Anthony Shin (100 free, 52.43) and Nick Ly (100 breast, 1:09.86) were other event winners for the Mustangs.

Costa Mesa plays host to the Orange Coast League finals next week, beginning with preliminaries on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Corona del Mar 95, Northwood 75

IRVINE — Meagan Popp, Bridgett Storm and Eva Merrell all won two individual events for CdM in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League meet at Northwood High.

Popp won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.11) and 100 breast (1:05.81), Storm won the 100 free (56.10) and 500 free (5:29.49), while Merrell captured the 200 IM (2:07.78) and 100 back (56.67).

CdM finished off a perfect league dual meet season at 5-0. The Sea Kings race at rival Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay on Thursday.

Costa Mesa 107, Calvary Chapel 49

Yesennia Villa won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 19.03 seconds for Mesa in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League meet at Costa Mesa High.

Karlee Kistler won the 100 fly in 1:24.63, while Bridgette Smitheram captured the 100 free in 1:01.19. Kendra Ferguson won the 100 backstroke in 1:12.91.

Next up for the Mustangs are league preliminaries next Wednesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 17, Whitney 1

CYPRESS — Sage Hill swept in doubles to easily win the Academy League match Wednesday at Whitney.

The Lightning, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, close out league play with a key match against No. 7 Crean Lutheran on Friday at The Tennis Club. Sage Hill (13-3, 7-0 in league) can clinch the outright league title with a victory.

BOYS’ GOLF

Marina 185, Newport Harbor 202

Noah Mayne shot two-over-par 38 to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League match Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Reed Pfeiffer (39), Landon Knight (40), Luke Schea (40) and Richie Simons (45) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-7, 3-6 in league).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. University

IRVINE — Connor Devarian had 11 kills for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s 25-10, 25-17, 25-10 Pacific Coast League match at University High.

Will Hunter had eight kills for CdM (21-6, 8-0 in league), while Ryan Moss and Kevin Fults added seven each.

Steven Guder had 19 assists for CdM, which plays host to Beckman on Friday.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Northwood 70, Corona del Mar 57

Parker Nostrand and Silviu Bocancea won two events each for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Bocancea won the discus (144 feet, 2 inches) and the shotput (47-8).

Nostrand won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 6.4 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:37.5.

He was also on the victorious 4x400 relay team that also included Omar Edel, Chris Lin and Austin Baxter and finished in 4:07.6.

Baxter also won the 300 hurdles (41.8). Sutton Barbato took first in the 400 (53.9) and Leif Hellgren won the 3,200 (10:15.6).

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Northwood 82, Corona del Mar 45

The Sea Kings won the throws with Amanda Cooper taking first in the discus (113-2) and Maria King winning the shotput (32-0) in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Claire Keddington won the high jump (5-0). Lilly Schmidt, Bella Solomon, Katie Sullivan and Erika Anderson won the 4x400 relay in 4:27.4.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 12, University 2

Evan Larsen allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings for the the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game on Tuesday.

Brenden Heuston (two for three, two RBIs, two doubles), Nick Premer (one for four, three RBIs, double), Teddy Stuka (three for four, RBI, double), Kevin McCarthy (one for two, RBI), Preston Hartsell (RBI) and J.T. Schwartz (RBI) also contributed for CdM (15-6, 7-3 in league).

The Sea Kings play host to Uni Friday at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Beckman 198, Corona del Mar 205

The Sea Kings’ Tyler See shared medalist honors with Brett Robinson of the Patriots as both carded an even-par 35 in the Pacific Coast league match Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Garrett Wayne (38), John Hong (42), Bryan Hong (45) and Ian Fletcher (45) also scored for CdM (4-5 in league).
