Briefs: Conlogue wins in Australia

Sage Hill School alumna Courtney Conlogue won the Margaret River Pro women’s surfing event in Australia on April 21.

Conlogue earned the third World Championship Tour win of her career by knocking off No. 1-ranked Carissa Moore, 16.93 points to 13.13, in the final.

The win moves Conlogue, a 22-year-old Santa Ana resident, up to No. 2 behind Moore in the world tour rankings. Moore was the two-time defending champion of the event and also had won the first two events of 2015 on tour.

“I’m feeling really good and the hard work is starting to pay off,” Conlogue said in an interview with The West Australian newspaper. “I’ve put so many hours into trying to get into the top seeds and I want to try and crack open the top three. They are such amazing talents and you really have to be on point when you’re competing against them.”

The next event on the tour is the Rio Women’s Pro, held May 11-22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

UCI’s Duarte on list

UC Irvine junior Mikey Duarte has been named to the initial watch list of candidates for the Brooks Wallace Award given annually to the nation’s top collegiate shortstop.

Duarte sports a .983 fielding percentage and is leading the Anteaters with a .345 batting average. He tops the team with 51 hits and is tied for first with 31 runs scored. His 15 doubles rank No. 28 in the country.

Hitting leadoff for UCI, Duarte is fifth in the Big West in batting average, ninth in on-base percentage (.427) and tied for second in runs scored.

Duarte is the second UCI shortstop to be selected as a candidate for the Brooks Wallace Award. Associate head coach Ben Orloff became the program’s inaugural winner in 2009.

The award will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.

VU trio honored

Vanguard University juniors Jose Rojas and Sean Isaac, as well as sophomore Brandon Sandoval have been named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference baseball team.

Rojas, a shortstop, hit ..318 with a team-best nine homers and 48 runs batted in during the regular season, in which he started all 52 games. His 64 hits included 13 doubles and he scored 32 runs. His slugging percentage was .527

Isaac, the Lions’ ace starting pitcher, was 8-4 with a 2.60 earned-run average in the regular season. He allowed 73 hits and struck out 83 in 93 1/3 innings.

Sandoval, an outfielder, hit .286 and had 35 stolen bases in 41 attempts in 52 regular-season starts. He had one homer, 12 doubles and 24 RBIs, most often batting form the leadoff spot. He also scored 45 runs.

The Lions (34-18, 27-15 in conference, good for fourth place), face regular-season champion The Master’s in the first round of the four-team double-elimination conference tournament that begins Thursday at 3 p.m.

The 20 All-GSAC honorees are all representatives of the four teams that qualified for the GSAC Tournament.

Three Lions lauded

Vanguard University seniors Brittney Boggs, Breanne Gomez and Shelby Kuryllo have been named All-Golden State Athletic Conference in softball.

Boggs, a first baseman who hit .399 with five home runs and 56 runs batted in in the regular season, was honored for the third straight season.

Gomez, a catcher and designated player, hit .329 with four homers and 32 RBIs to help the No. 16-ranked Lions finish 36-20 in the regular season, 14-10 in the GSAC, good for third place. She was honored last season and also in 2012.

Kuryllo, a third baseman, hit .376 with nine homers and 50 RBIs in the regular season to earn her second straight all-conference nod.

Boggs’ 77 regular-season hits included 16 doubles and three triples. She scored 44 runs and slugged .591. She committed only six errors in 381 chances for a fielding percentage of .986.

Gomez had 46 hits, including 14 doubles and four triples in the regular season. Her slugging percentage was .571 and her on-base percentage was .405. Her fielding percentage was .969.

Kuryllo, who like Boggs started all 56 regular-season games, scored 50 runs and had 65 hits, including 18 doubles. Her on-base percentage was .445 and she had scored 35 runs.

Vanguard is the No. 3 seed in the GSAC Tournament that begins Thursday. The Lions open against San Diego Christian at 11:45 a.m. at Concordia University in Irvine.

UCI’s Sicard lauded

UC Irvine sophomore Lloyd Sicard was named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s track for the second time this season.

Sicard ran the fastest 110-meter high hurdles time in UC Irvine history under all conditions with a time of 13.78 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 18. He placed third among collegians in the event.

His time ranks No. 1 in the Big West this season, sixth in the West Region and No. 13 nationally.

Sicard, who also earned the conference’s weekly honor Mar. 24, was Big West Freshman of the Year last season in men’s track.
