Track & Field: Bender wins 300 hurdles at OC Championships

MISSION VIEJO — Newport Harbor senior Hope Bender finished first in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.39 seconds, smashing the school record of 45.22 set in 1982, while fellow teammate Rachelle A La Torre won the discus throw with a personal-best heave of 139 feet, helping the Sailors place fourth at the invitational at Mission Viejo High on Saturday.

Bender also took second in the 100 hurdles in 15.02 and third in the 400 in 57.09, breaking her own school record.

A La Torre was runner-up in the shotput with throw of 38-2 1/2.

Newport Harbor’s Emma Kratzberg was second (44.50) in the 300 hurdles and third (15.16) in the 100 hurdles.

Corona del Mar’s Jacqueline Choe placed fifth in the 1,600-rated race in 5 minutes 22.89 seconds, and Costa Mesa’s Gabriela Perez was 11th in 5:26.94.

Paige LaBare came in eighth for the Mustangs in the 100 by running a 12.71 and she was 10th in the 200 with a time of 26.42.

In the 3,200, Newport Harbor’s Emily Bacon placed 11th in the 3,200 in 11:13.89. Choe finished in 11:32.57, good for 15th.

CdM’s Lilly Schmidt was 20th (5:17.16) in the 1,600-seeded event that Newport Harbor’s Erin Barth and Kendal Marking finished 25th (5:22.75) and 26th (5:26.71) in, respectively.

CdM’s Victoria Rihm cleared 4-10 in the high jump and came in 14th.

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill School senior CJ McCord won the high jump, clearing 6 feet 6 inches at the invitational at Mission Viejo High on Saturday.

Costa Mesa’s Anuare Magana placed sixth with a time of 4 minutes 19.68 seconds in the 1,600-meter seeded race.

Magana also placed ninth in the 800 in 1:58.39.

CdM’s Parker Nostrand was seventh in the 1,600-seeded race, finishing in 4:20.97. He took sixth in the 800 in 1:56.72.

Sage Hill’s Chance Kuehnel was 11th in the 110 hurdles in 15.96. He cleared 6 feet in the high jump and finished fifth.

In the shotput, Newport Harbor’s Stephen Mantei took 10th with throw of 48-5, while CdM’s Silviu Bocancea was 12th (47-3 1/2).

Mantei placed 11th (155-1) in the discus throw and Bocancea was 12th (151-5).

CdM’s Sutton Barbato finished 11th (22.92) in the 200 and Austin Baxter was 13th (41.52) in the 300 hurdles.

Newport Harbor’s Tristan Manning was 10th (40-8 3/4) in the triple jump.

Newport Harbor’s Ryan Fegan and CdM’s Ryan Myers each cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, tying them for 12th.
