High School Roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball in semis at Santa Barbara TOC

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Matt Ctvrtlik amassed 50 assists and three block assists to help lead Corona del Mar High past Santa Barbara, 26-24, 24-26, 25-14, 25-20, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

The Sea Kings (16-4) will play against Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in a semifinal at 10:30 a.m.

Against Santa Barbara, Will Hunter (15 kills, six block assists), Augie Miller (14 kills), Ryan Moss (13 kills, six digs), Dan Kobrine (11 kills) and Kevin Fults (seven kills, one solo block, three block assists) also contributed.

CdM beat Santa Ynez, 25-15, 25-14, 25-10, to open the tournament, as Miller had 12 kills with no errors.

Hunter (seven killls, two solo blocks, two block assists), Fults (six kills), Moss (six kills) and Ctvrtlik (35 assists) were also key in the win.

Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian

Zach Drobenko produced 17 kills in the Academy League match that the Lightning won, 25-11, 25-11, 25-13, at home on Friday.

Parker Warden contributed seven kills.

Newport Harbor def. Fountain Valley

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — The Sailors earned a 25-20, 25-22, 25-11 Sunset League win Friday.

Newport Harbor improved to 4-6, 4-2 in league.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 7, Irvine 1

IRVINE — The Sea Kings scored seven runs in the seventh inning of the Pacific Coast League game Friday.

Evan Larsen had two runs batted in, Preston Hartsell (double), Brenden Heuston, Robby Hurst and Justin Hess had one RBI each.

Freshman Chazz Martinez, who also doubled, earned the pitching win as he went six innings. He gave up six hits, one run and he struck out four. Tommy Paoletti finished it off, pitching a scoreless seventh.

CdM (12-6, 4-3 in league) will face Woodbridge at Windrow Park in Irvine Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 19, St. Margaret’s 6

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Parker Reposa and Brett Super each hit two-run home runs on Friday, keeping the visiting Lightning undefeated in Academy League play.

Reposa, who went two for four, homered in the first inning for Sage Hill (11-6, 6-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 poll. Sage Hill swept the two-game series against rival St. Margaret’s.

Kellen Ochi went three for four with two runs batted in and three stolen bases, while Michael Helton was three for three with an RBI and four runs.

Bock went two for four with a home run, four RBIs and a double. He also improved to 3-3 after allowing one run and four hits in four innings.

Los Alamitos 6, Newport Harbor 5

LOS ALAMITOS — Christian Watson went three for four with a double and three RBIs for the Saiors in the Sunset League game Friday.

Watson delivered the double in the fifth inning to clear the bases loaded.

Jonah Dipoto drove him in with a single to tie the game, 5-5.

Dipoto pitched 4 1/3 and Luke Genova came in and loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Liam Ogburn came in to hit the next batter to end the game.

Jake Genova was two for three. Dipoto was one for three with an RBI.

Newport Harbor (10-9, 1-5 in league), which has suffered three one-run losses, two in extra innings, will play at Huntington Beach Saturday at 11 a.m.

TRACK & FIELD

Academy League Meet

IRVINE — The Sage Hill School boys’ team placed sixth out of sixth teams and the girls’ team was sixth Friday at Crean Lutheran.

Chance Kuehnel won two events and was on the victorious 4x100 relay. He won the 110 hurdles (16.10), and the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches).

DJ Henry, CJ McCord and Nima Nakhjavani were also on the 4x100 relay (44.69).

McCord won the 400 in 51.41. Nakhjavani won the 200 in 23.70.

Alex Escalera won the pole vault (11-0). Miles McCord won the long jump (20-0).

Jack Renton, CJ McCord, Zach Burns and Miles McCord won the 4x400 relay (3:37).

Emily Lassiter won the pole vault, clearing 8-7, a school record.
