College Roundup: Vanguard baseball falls to Westmont

Host Vanguard University saw its 11-game winning streak halted in an 8-3 setback to Westmont in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.
But the Lions bounced back for a 5-1 triumph in the second game and are now 32-13, 25-11 in conference.
Jose Rojas hit a walk-off grand slam in the eighth inning of Game 2 to break a 1-1 tie, Rojas was two for four with two runs batted in in the first game.
Michael Jordan pitched 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings to earn the Game 2 victory and improve to 2-2.
No. 12-ranked Westmont is 32-9, 26-7.

Irvine Valley 8, Orange Coast 6
The host Pirates dropped their third straight Orange Empire Conference game in 11 innings on Saturday.
The Pirates led, 3-0, and 4-1, but the Lasers rallied to force extra innings. IVC (17-14, 7-9 in conference) scored four in the 11th and OCC’s two-run rally in the home half of the inning fell short.
Stephen Corona went three for four for OCC (19-12, 10-6), which received two hits each from Chaneng Varela, Jack Kruger, and Nick Grimes.
Scott Serigstad allowed four runs, just two earned, in eight innings for OCC, which is tied with Golden West for second place, one game behind Cypress.
Art Vidrio allowed three hits and three runs in 1/3 of an inning in relief and Jack Pabich absorbed the loss for the Pirates.

Orange Empire Conference championships
MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast College sophomore Hali Dickson won the singles title on Saturday, defeating Annely Heinze of Riverside, 6-4, 7-4 (6), in the final.
Dickson topped Renee Walton of Irvine Valley, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinal earlier Saturday.
Dickson and doubles teammate Emily Nickles were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual runners-up Walton and Tiana Cung from IVC.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine 7, Hawaii 6
The host Anteaters held on in the crucial Big West Conference contest Saturday.
UCI goalie Jillian Yocum made the most important of her 13 saves to stop a Hawaii attacker with 13 seconds left to preserve the victory.
Danielle Warde led six UCI scorers with two goals to help the No. 5-ranked ‘Eaters improve to 17-6, 3-0 in conference.
No. 6-ranked Hawaii is 13-8, 2-2.

SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
ROCKLIN — Visiting Vanguard University lost a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference games at William Jessup on Saturday, falling in the opener, 13-9, then dropping the second game, 5-4.
The No. 13-ranked Lions rallied from deficits of 6-2 and 9-6 to pull even in seven innings of Game 1, but the hosts scored four in the bottom of the eighth to prevail.
Breanne Gomez went three for five with three runs batted in and Shelby Kuryllo was two for four with three RBIs and two runs for the Lions in the opener.
In Game 2, Kaitlin Estes went three for four and Taylor Wilson was one for four with two RBIs for Vanguard (35-13, 13-5 in conference).
William Jessup, which overcame a 4-3 deficit by scoring twice in the seventh of Game 2, is now 16-22, 8-10.
