Girls’ Basketball: Newport’s Izzi on first team in Sunset League
Newport Harbor High girls’ basketball junior point guard McKenna Izzi has earned first-team All-Sunset League honors for girls’ basketball.
Izzi averaged team-highs of 12.5 points and 2.5 steals per game for Newport Harbor, also earning 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest. The Sailors went 8-16, 1-9 in the Sunset League and failed to qualify for the CIF playoffs.
The one league win was significant, as Newport Harbor won at Marina, 46-39, on Feb. 4 for their first league win in four years. It snapped a 37-game league losing streak.
Newport Harbor senior center Kendra Mungia was a second-team all-league selection. Mungia averaged 6.3 points, and team-bests of 6.9 rebounds and two blocks per game, for the Sailors.
Junior Danielle Iwami of league champion Los Alamitos earned Sunset League MVP honors.
