College Roundup: Vanguard baseball splits

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University won the second game, 9-1, after dropping the opener, 5-2, against Westmont in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Taylor McKnight was two for four with four runs batted in to key the Lions (23-13, 15-9) in Game 2.

Bret Collins was three for four with one RBI and Brandon Sandoval was two for four with three runs scored for Vanguard in Game 2.

Clayton Voechting pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing no earned runs and seven hits to improve to 5-2 for Vanguard, which had only five hits in Game 1.

Westmont is 21-14, 12-13.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Vanguard University won the first game, but had to settle for a split against Golden State Athletic Conference host San Diego Christian on Saturday.

Lions pitcher Rachel Stalford allowed eight hits in a complete-game 7-2 victory to improve to 9-3, as Taylor Wilson, Brittney Boggs and Summer Penner had two hits apiece and Shelby Kurryllo drove in three runs in the opener.

The hosts rallied from a 7-1 deficit to claim the second game, 8-7, despite three hits from Boggs and four RBIs from Kuryllo.

Vanguard is 24-16, 6-6 in conference.

San Diego Christian is 11-9, 7-5.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Hawaii 3

Kat Facey and Sarah Stadfelt won in singles and doubles to help the host Anteaters improve to 5-0 in Big West Conference play on Saturday.

Facey and Stadfelt combined to win, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles to help UCI (12-5) earn the doubles point.

Facey won, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5 singles and Stadfelt topped her No. 6 singles foe, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Hawaii is 9-8, 4-2.

Vanguard 5, Westmont 4

Brooke Ferslov won in singles and doubles to lead the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

Ferslov won, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles and teamed with Ashley Wao-Udin to post an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

No. 9-ranked Vanguard is 9-7, 6-0 in conference.

Westmont, ranked No. 12, is 6-10, 4-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Westmont 1

The host Lions dominated the Golden State Athletic Conference match on Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

Stefan Kilchhofer, Roger Muri, Daymon Johnson and Filip Burnac all won in singles and doubles for No. 4-ranked Vanguard (10-4, 6-0 in conference).

No. 5-ranked Westmont fell to 8-5, 4-2.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

UC Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine freshman Lloyd Sicard won the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.19 seconds and ran the first leg on the victorious 4x100 relay team on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Stephen Brown won the pole vault with a mark of 16-13/4 as UCI finished seventh as a team.

Freshman Isaiah Thompson was third in the 1,500 in three minutes, 48.23 seconds, and was fourth in the 800 in 1:53.12.

Cameron Vaca was third in the 400 hurdles (54.11) and Mason Miller was third in the discus throw (157-10).

James Douglas, Mike Kennedy and Brandon Howard joined Sicard on the winning relay, which clocked a time of 41.55.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

UC Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine senior Ericka Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.60 on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Freshman Ariel Cheng was second in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 31/2 inches, while Itos Aikhionbare was second in the shot put ( 51-81/4) and third in the discus throw (162-0).

UCI finished eighth as a team.
