Girls’ Water Polo: Kapana MVP of Sunset League
Newport Harbor High senior goalie Carlee Kapana has earned MVP honors in the Sunset League for girls’ water polo.
Kapana is joined by Sailors senior defender Rachel Whitelegge, senior center Chanel Schilling and senior utility Kate Pipkin as first-team all-league selections.
Kapana, bound for UCLA, is a repeat first-team selection. She made an Orange County-best 317 saves for the Sailors, who won the league title for the seventh time in nine seasons after going a perfect 5-0. Newport Harbor went 23-7 overall in longtime Coach Bill Barnett’s final season, advancing to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals before falling to Foothill.
Whitelegge, also bound for UCLA, had a team-best 49 steals. She was third on the team with 42 goals and also dished out 17 assists, also third on the Sailors.
The UC San Diego-bound Schilling led Newport Harbor with 54 goals, adding 20 steals and 11 assists.
Pipkin, a team captain headed to Indiana University, was second on Newport Harbor with 52 goals. She added a team-best 29 assists and also had 37 steals, which was second on the squad.
Newport Harbor senior driver Ellie Reid (headed to George Washington University), senior defender Isabelle Leveque (Marist College) and junior attacker Katie Kearns all earned second-team All-Sunset League honors.
