College Roundup: OCC baseball wins seventh straight

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 7, Fullerton 4

FULLERTON — Sophomore Dominic Purpura made his first start in 28 career appearances to pace the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.

OCC (19-9, 10-3 in conference) has won seven straight and remains alone atop the conference standings, one game ahead of Cypress.

No statistics were available from Saturday’s game.

Doubleheader

PHOENIX — Brett Collins went six for eight with six runs batted in and four runs scored to help visiting Vanguard University sweep Arizona Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Collins homered in a 6-1 Game 1 triumph and the Lions rolled, 14-4, in the second game to extend their winning streak to six.

Scott Torrey allowed one unearned run and three in seven innings to get the win in the opener. He is now 4-0.

David Stone was three for four with one RBI and Brandon Sandoval was three for five for the Lions (26-12, 20-10) in the opener.

In Game 2, Kevin Bettencourt was three for three, Taylor McKnight was two for three with a homer and two RBIs, Jose Reyes was two for five with three RBIs and Stone added three RBIs.

Arizona Christian is 8-24, 8-22.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. BYU

PROVO, Utah — Senior opposite Zack La Cavera slammed 16 kills to help lead the No. 5-ranked Anteaters to a 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Travis Woloson added 14 kills, while junior middle blocker Jason Agopian and junior oustide hitter Kyle Russell had 11 kills each for UCI (20-4, 14-3 in the MPSF).

Senior setter Roberto Frazzoni amaased 53 assists and nine digs for the Anteaters.

BYU is 13-9, 10-8

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept visiting Hope International in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday.

Taylor Doyle pitched a complete game in a 5-1 Game 1 triumph, improving to 7-1.

In Game 2, Alexandra Olvera allowed one run and four hits in six innings of a 9-1 win that ended after six innings.

Olvera is 7-3 to help the No.12-ranked Lions improve to 31-9, 13-3 in conference.

Payton Ross went three for three with two runs, Kaitlin Estes was two for three with one run batted in and Lindsay Sullivan was one for two with two RBIs in the opener.

In the second game, Brittney Boggs was two for three with two runs, while Sullivan and Haley Croce each had two RBIs.

HIU is 8-37, 0-16.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 4

SANTA BARBARA — Danielle Warde had four goals to pace the visiting Anteaters in their Big West Conference opener Saturday.

Cambria Shockley and Kelsey Thornton added goals for the No. 5-ranked winners (14-6, 1-0 in conference).

No. 15-ranked UCSB is 12-13, 1-1.

UCI plays at No. 7-ranked Cal State Northridge on Sunday at noon.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas — UC Irvine sophomore Lloyd Sicard was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday.

His time of 13.86 seconds ranks No. 2 in UCI annals and is just six-tenths of a second off the school record set by Stan Longino in 1983.

UC Riverside Spring Classic

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine junior Kyle Hubbard won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.72 seconds Saturday.

Freshman Matt Dispenza was second in the high jump (6-feet, 6 3/4 inches) and also seventh in the long jump (21-5 1/2).

UCI’s Oliver Pham was fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.21), Lawrence O’Hara was sixth in the shot put (50-4 3/4), Jake Williams was eighth in the 800 in 1:54.81, and Charles Michinock was eighth in the 400 hurdles (1 minute, 5.33 seconds).

Michael Hamill, was ninth in the 100 in 11.31, and Riley Martin was 10th in the 1,500 in 3:57.69.

UCI was seventh as a team with 32 points.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

UC Riverside Spring Classic

RIVERSIDE — Rebecka Miranda was second in the triple jump and Marissa McGuinness was second in the javelin to pace UC Irvine on Saturday.

Miranda jumped 38 feet, 3 1/2 inches, while McGuinness posted a mark of 125-3.

Ariel Cheng was third in the pole vault (12-5 1/2) for the Anteaters.

Earning fourth-place finishes for UCI were Lauren Ellison (37-0 1/4 in the triple jump) and Tyra Jones (14.83 seconds in the 100-meters hurdles).

Danika Hitchcock was fifth in the triple jump (36-11 1/2), while Kelly Magana (112-7 in the javelin), Lucy Phan (11-5 3/4 in the pole vault), Kylie Cordero (4-11 in the high jump) and Bridget Devaney (170-10 in the hammer throw) had seventh-place finishes.

UCI was eighth as a team with 50.5 points.
