High School Roundup: CdM’s Merrell breaks two school swim records

IRVINE — CdM freshman Eva Merrell set two school records in her first high school dual meet, the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener on the road Wednesday.
Merrell won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.26 seconds, breaking Brynne Wong’s mark of 54.38 from 2012. Merrell also won the 100 backstroke in 56.20, lowering Stephania Haralabidis’ mark of 57.74 from 2013.
Harvard-bound senior Meagan Popp won the 200 individual medley (2:05.92) and 500 free (5:02.73) for the Sea Kings.
CdM swims Saturday night at the Millikan Southern Section Relays.

Sophomore Kennedy Mulvaney had four goals for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League game at CdM.
Jensen Coop added three goals, and Lauren Grable and Paige Nelson both scored twice. Ashley Olson made 11 saves for CdM (3-3, 1-1 in league).

Katie Hendrix had three goals and four draw controls for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Century/Sunset League game at Newport Harbor High.
Attackers Daniela Vazquez and Andie Piovesan each scored two for Newport Harbor (4-3, 2-0 in league).

IRVINE — The Hanson brothers, Justin and Tim, each won two individual events in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday on the road.
Justin Hanson won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.05, and the 100 butterfly in 50.87. Tim Hanson captured the 200 freestyle (1:45.22) and 500 freestyle (4:42.27).
CdM races against Capistrano Valley and Loyola of Los Angeles in a tri-meet Thursday at Capo Valley.

Newport Harbor 94, Los Alamitos 76
LOS ALAMITOS — Senior Hayden Hemmens won the 100-yard backstroke and 500 freestyle for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Sunset League opener at Los Alamitos High.
Hemmens won the backstroke in 55.29 seconds, and the 500 free in 4:46.50. Senior Dominik Folkner won the 100 free (47.41) and was third in the 200 individual medley (2:02.34).
Jack Mooers won the 100 butterfly in 55.55 and Simon Young captured the 200 free in 1:48.30 for the Sailors, who also won all three relays.

IRVINE — Will Hunter recorded eight kills and Sam Kobrine had seven kills to lead the Sea Kings to a 25-13, 25-9, 26-24 Pacific Coast League opening win on Wednesday.
Kevin Fults added six kills, one block and four digs, while Matt Ctvrtlik amassed 21 assists for CdM (11-4, 1-0 in league), which plays at Irvine on Friday.

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High senior Anuare Magana won the 1,600-meter race and finished fifth in the 3,200 on Saturday.
He won the 1,600 in 4:24.7, a personal record. He finished the 3,200 in a personal-best 9:17.0, which ranks No. 10 in the state.
