College Roundup: UCI men’s golf wins Cal Poly Match Play Championship

MEN’S GOLF

Cal Poly Match Play Championship

ARROYO GRANDE — UC Irvine won the event with a 4-1 triumph over host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the final on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Senior Pete Fernandez, sophomore Bryan Shin, junior Jacob Schulze and freshman David Kim all won their matches on Tuesday.

UCI went 3-0 in the two-day event, also topping UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, and the Cal Poly “B” team, 3.5-1.5 on Monday.

Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters return to action April 6-7 in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 4, Cal State Bakersfield 3

Sophomore Andrew Martinez belted a game-winning, two-run pinch-hit homer in the 11th inning on Sunday to help the host Anteaters sweep the three-game nonconference series.

It was the team-leading sixth homer of the season for Martinez.

Mikey Duarte and Grant Palmer each had two hits for UCI (11-10), which has a winning record for the first time this season.

Evan Manarino allowed eight hits and one run in seven innings, but was not involved in the decision.

Sam Moore, who allowed a run in the 11th, earned the victory for UCI.

The Roadrunners are 11-12-1.

Orange Coast 6, Santa Ana 1

Sophomore Scott Serigstad allowed one run unearned run on four hits in 8 1/3 innings to pace the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Serigstad struck out four and walked four to improve to 4-2.

Jack Kruger, J.T. McClellan, Nike Grimes and Jeff Nellis had two hits apiece for OCC (17-9, 8-3 in conference).

Santa Ana is 11-12-1, 2-9.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University defeated San Diego Christian, 6-3, in Game 1 and 4-3 in the second game to sweep the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday.

Lindsay Sullivan went two for three with three runs batted in in the first game, in which Brittney Boggs had two RBIs for the No. 11-ranked Lions.

Breanne Gomez was two for three with one RBI in the second game, as Vanguard scored twice in the seventh to overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Vanguard improved to 29-7, 11-3 in conference.

San Diego Christian is 23-11, 6-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 9, Cypress 0

Darren Dinh won all 12 games and fellow Pirates’ singles players Ross Ewart and Joseph Nguyen won 12 of 13 games to lead the hosts in Orange Empire Conference action Tuesday.

Elmer van Butselaar lost only two games and John Lieu lost only three for OCC (10-6, 4-5 in conference).

Butselaar also contributed to a doubles victory.

Dartmouth 5, UC Irvine 2

Kat Facey and Mazy Watrous posted the lone singles wins for the host Anteaters in the nonconference match on Monday.

Facey defeated her rival in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 7-5, while Watrous claimed a 6-7, 6-3 (10-4) win in the No. 5 spot.

UCI fell to 9-7.

No. 23-ranked Dartmouth is 13-1.
