The Newport Beach Water Polo Club 16-and-under team won the gold medal at the 12th annual Orange County Turbo Cup over the March 14-15 weekend at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

Contributors for the 16-and-under boys included goalies Andrew Potter and Max Sandberg, Aidan Barnett, Nick Bergsma, Ryan Brosnan, Hannes Daube, Nic Rimlinger, Cole Brosnan, Ben Toffel, John Rankin, Oscar Goodell, Jason Grew and Jackson Westerman.

“This was a good tournament for my 16U blue team, although the competition was not what I expected,” Newport Coach Pavle Filipovic said. “We wanted to improve in certain areas of the game, and I think we accomplished that. I am glad that the boys are playing hard and constantly progressing individually and as a team.”

In addition, the Newport 12-and-under boys coached by Marco Palazzo won silver.

The 12U team consisted of goalie William Harrington, William Kelly, Grant Loth, Sam Allen, Gus Oeding, Richie Rimlinger, Jackson Banta, Luke Redoutey, Eli Liechty, Kiernen Springborn, Ben Liechty and Nicholas Kennedy.

“I am very proud of my boys, they played a great tournament,” Palazzo said. “This is the third consecutive medal for these boys in the last three tournaments. This means we are moving in the right direction with them. They have solid fundamentals and already great knowledge of the game. It is so much fun to coach them.”

The Newport Beach 14-and-under team, playing up in the 16U Gold division, took fifth place. The team was coached by Stefano Ragosa.
