BASEBALL

UC Irvine 5, San Jose State 2

Freshman Keston Hiura went four for four with a home run and one run batted in to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

Cameron Bishop went two for three with a homer and two RBIs, while Grant Palmer and Cole Kreuter also had RBIs for the winners (7-10).

Matt Esparza allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 3-1.

Kyle Davis worked 2 2/3 innings to claim his third save.

San Jose State is 7-11.

The two teams play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University split two Golden State Athletic Conference games against Biola on Saturday, winning the first game, 4-2, and dropping the second game, 9-2.

Paul Keating went three for five with one run batted in and one run in the opener, in which Scott Torrey pitched 6 1/3 innings to improve to 3-0.

Brett Collins, Justin Vega and Jose Reyes all had two hits and Marshall McKinnon worked 2 2/3 innings for his third save.

In Game 2, Brandon Sandoval went two for four with one run and Keating had a hit and drove in two as Vanguard (20-12, 14-10 in conference) managed just six hits.

Biola is 11-17, 9-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine def. UC Irvine

MALIBU — Third-ranked UC Irvine couldn’t hold off fifth-ranked Pepperdine as the Waves rallied to a 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19 17-15 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win at Firestone Fieldhouse Saturday evening.

The Anteaters snap a nine-match winning streak and go to 18-4 overall and 12-3 in the MPSF.

Opposite Zack La Cavera led the Anteaters with 18 kills, three aces and nine digs. Outside hitter Tamir Hershko recorded 15 kills and three aces, while Kyle Russell added 10 kills. Setter Michael Seata recorded a season-high 54 set assists and Micheal Brinkley had a match-high 15 digs.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University split two nonconference games against Midland, winning the first, 7-0, and dropping the second, 4-3, on Saturday.

Taylor Doyle threw a complete-game shutout in the opener. She allowed four hits, no walks and struck out three.

Shelby Kuryllo went two for three with two runs batted in, while Brittney Boggs, Lindsay Sullivan and Haley Croce each had one RBI for the Lions in the first game.

In Game 2, Taylor Hallahan went two for four and Kaitlin Estes was one for two with two RBIs for Vanguard (22-6).

Midlands is 6-5.
