BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, USC 2

The host Anteaters scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to the nonconference victory on Tuesday.

Freshman starter Alonzo Garcia was the first of three effective pitchers for UCI (6-9), earning his first collegiate win by allowing one earned run in 2 2/3 innings.

Freshman Shaun Vetrovec, a Newport Harbor High product, allowed one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings, before Kyle Davis pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to post his second save.

Freshman Keston Hiura was two for four with two runs batted in and one run, while Jerry McClanahan and Mikey Duarte were both two for four for UCI.

Parker Coss, Cameron Bishop and Wyatt Castro had one RBI each for the winners.

USC is 15-2.

Golden West 5, Orange Coast 4 (10 innings)

The host Pirates scored a run in the ninth to force extra innings but the Rustlers prevailed in Orange Empire Conference action Tuesday.

Cole Rutherford was two for four with a run batted in and Jack Kruger went two for five with one RBI and one run for the Pirates (12-9, 3-3 in conference).

Dominic Purpura absorbed his first loss in three decisions, despite allowing two runs (one earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Pupura allowed five hits, walked none and struck out three, but fell to 2-1.

Golden West is 11-8, 3-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 80, UC Irvine 71

FULLERTON — The Anteaters fell in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton and finished the season 8-24.

Shereen Sutherland led the Anteaters with 21 points. She made nine of 13 field-goal attempts and had six rebounds.

Madison McKenney had 15 points on five-for-eight shooting from the field, while Mokun Fajemisin and Irene Chavez had 11 points apiece for UCI. Fajemisin had a team-best eight rebounds.

UC Davis is 14-16.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

IRVINE — Visiting Vanguard University fell from first place to third in the Golden State Athletic Conference by being swept by host Concordia on Tuesday.

The No, 8-ranked Eagles (21-3, 6-2 in conference) won the first game, 5-2, then earned a 12-4 win.

Brittney Boggs was two for four and Haley Croce was one for three with two runs batted in for the Lions (19-5, 7-3) in Game 1.

In the second game, Shelby Kuryllo went two for two with a double and a solo home run, while Vanguard teammate Kaitlin Estes homered and drove in two.
