College Roundup: UCI men’s basketball falls to UC Davis

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 80, UC Irvine 61

DAVIS — Corey Hawkins scored 30 points to lead the Aggies in the Big West Conference regular-season finale at Davis Saturday night.

The Anteaters are the No. 3 seed for the Big West Tournament and will face sixth-seeded UC Riverside Thursday at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal game at the Honda Center.

Hawkins scored 22 of his points in the second half as the Aggies (24-5, 14-2) overcame a 28-24 halftime deficit.

Avery Johnson added 13 points for UC Davis, the conference’s regular-season champion and top seed for next week’s league tournament.

Senior forward Will Davis II led UCI (18-12, 11-5) with 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore center Mamadou Ndiaye added 11 points and eight boards. Davis scored all of his points in the first half.

Junior guard Alex Young registered nine points and three assists while sophomore post Ioannis Dimakopoulos added seven points.

Junior forward Mike Best recorded six points and five boards, and sophomore guards Luke Nelson and Jaron Martin also scored six points.

Junior guard Aaron Wright collected seven rebounds.

UCI, which had a 37-36 edge on the boards, shot 35.5 percent from the field to the Aggies’ 48 percent. UC Davis hit 8 of 16 threes and UCI 5 of 16.

The Anteaters committed just six turnovers in the game to eight for UC Davis.

The Aggies hit 24 of 29 free throws, including 18 of 20 in the second half. UCI was 12 of 16 from the foul line.

UCI went on a 7-2 run to close the first half and take a 28-24 lead at intermission.

A jumper by Hawkins with 15:34 left in the game gave UC Davis the lead for good at 38-37 and the Aggies went up by 11 at 56-45 on a three by Brynton Lemar with 8:02 remaining.

UC Davis hit 13 of 14 free throws in the final 2:51.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO — UC Irvine recorded 12 hits in both games to post a nonconference sweep Saturday and win the three-game series at UT San Antonio.

The Anteaters took the first game, 10-5, and prevailed, 9-3, in Game 2 to improve to 4-9.

Parker Coss went three four for with three runs and one run batted in while Mikey Duarte was three for five with one RBI and two runs in the opener.

Starter Matt Esparza earned the victory in Game 1, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Newport Harbor High product Shaun Vetrovec, a freshman, pitched 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings to get the Game 2 victory. Vetrovec, who allowed two hits and struck out five, is 1-1.

Mitchell Holland (three for four with one RBI), Keston Hiura (three for five with two runs scored), Grant Palmer (two for four with three RBIs) and Jerry McClanahan (two for four with one RBI), paced the offense in Game 2.

UTSA is 8-7.

UCI begins an 11-game homestand on Tuesday against USC at 6:30 p.m.

Doubleheader

SANTA CLARITA — Visiting Vanguard University won the first game, 4-2, but dropped the second game, 12-1, in Golden State Athletic Conference action against The Master’s on Saturday.

Scott Torrey threw a complete-game five-hitter to get the Game 1 win, improving to 2-0.

Jose Rojas was three for four with a home run and two runs batted in, while Brett Collins was two for four for the Lions in Game 1.

David Stone had the lone RBI for Vanguard (18-11, 12-9 in conference) in Game 2.

The Master’s, ranked No. 20, is 21-6, 16-5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 71, UC Davis 62

Raelyn Cheung-Sutton led the host Anteaters with 17 points in the Big West Conference regular-season finale on Saturday.

Sutton made five of eight field-goal attempts, including three of for from three-point range. She added seven assists and five rebounds.

Methlyn Onogomuho, a senior playing her final home game, added 14 points on seven-of-nine shooting, as well as seven rebounds and two assists.

UCI (8-23, 5-11 in conference) is the No. 8 seed in the eight-team Big West Conference Tournament. It will meet No. 5-seeded UC Davis (13-15, 8-8) in the first round on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept William Jessup, winning the first game, 1-0, and posting an 11-5 triumph in Game 2 of the Golden State Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Rachel Stalford threw a complete-game, four-hitter in the opener, in which Breanne Gomez was two for three and Summer Penner drove in the only Vanguard run in the fifth inning.

In the second game, Shelby Kuryllo homered and drove in four, while Taylor Wilson was two for four with four RBIs for the Lions (19-3, 7-1 in conference).

Payton Ross (two for two with one RBI) as well as Kaitlin Estes and Taylor Hallahan (both two for three with one RBI) also spearheaded the Vanguard offense in Game 2.

William Jessup is 9-15, 1-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Fluid Four Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — UC Irvine defeated host Indiana, 10-6, and topped Michigan, 11-9, on Saturday.

McKenna Mitchell had three goals, while Emily Carlson and Destene Albers had two apiece against the Hoosiers.

Mitchell, Carlson and Danielle Warde each had three goalsm while Cambria Shockley added two for the No. 5-ranked Anteaters (11-6) against the Wolverines.

UCI completes the tournament on Sunday.
