College Roundup: OCC sand volleyball wins in debut

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Pirates prevailed in the debut of the program at the Newland Street courts on Friday.
The No. 4 tandem of Danyelle Brown and Lehua Alama-Jordan posted a 21-6, 21-7 thumping, while the No. 3 duo of Kasse-Ann Dela Cruz and Alyssa Assayag earned a 21-17, 21-9 triumph.
OCC’s Danielle Boyette and Sierra Brown, as well as Megan Rawlings and Anbrea Tuell collected three-set wins in the No. 1 and No. 5 spot, respectively.
OCC plays host to Rio Hondo on Friday at noon.

BASEBALL
UT San Antonio 3, UC Irvine 2 (10 innings)
SAN ANTONIO — The visiting Anteaters squandered a pair of one-run leads, the second a 2-1 advantage in the 10th inning of the opener of a three-game nonconference series on Friday.
Mitchell Holland and John Brontsema both drove in runs for UCI (3-9), for which Keston Hiura went two for four to lead the eight-hit attack.
UCI starter Elliot Surrey allowed one run on five hits in 8 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out eight.
Sean Sparling was charged with two runs and took the loss, as Sam Moore surrendered a two-run double against the only hitter he faced.
The 3-9 start matches UCI’s worst since it opened the 1975 season 2-11. The ‘Eaters were also 3-9 to start the season in 1978, 1979 and 1983. They were 3-8-1 after 12 games in 1980.
UTSA is 8-5.
The two teams have a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

SANTA CLARITA — The visiting Lions dropped their fifth straight Golden State Athletic Conference game on Friday to fall to 17-10, 11-8 in conference.
Taylor McKnight was two for three with two runs batted in and Brandon Sandoval went two for four with two RBIs and a stolen base to pace the Lions’ 10-hit attack.
UCI starter Sean Isaac allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings to absorb the loss.
TMC, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, is 20-5, 15-4.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Irvine def. Ball State
Outside hitter Tamir Hershko had 13 kills to lead the No. 3-ranked Anteaters to a 25-16, 30-28, 25-18 victory over No. 12 Ball State in a nonconference match at the Bren Events Center Friday.
The Anteaters improve to 18-3 overall, playing their final non-conference regular season match. Ball State goes to 9-8 overall.
Zack La Cavera had 12 kills for UCI (18-3). Setter Michael Saeta had 39 set assists, three kills, a match-high nine digs and three total blocks.
UCI will play the next three matches on the road, starting at No. 5 Pepperdine on March 14 at 7 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse.
