High School Roundup: CdM’s Larsen delivers no-hitter

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 2, San Juan Hills 0

Junior Evan Larsen threw a no-hitter, striking out six and walking one in the Sea Kings’ home opener in the Foothill Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Larsen singled in the first run.

Teddy Stuka went for two for three with a double for CdM, while Preston Hartsell went two for three.

Nick Premer kept the no-hitter alive with a nice defensive play at third base in the fifth inning.

The Sea Kings resume tournament play at Santa Fe Springs on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Newport Harbor 7, Laguna Beach 2

LAGUNA BEACH — Liam Ogburn threw a complete game, striking out five while allowing one earned run, improving to 2-0 during the Sailors’ Foothill Division game in the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Christian Watson went three for four with a home run and two runs batted in for Newport Harbor (2-1).

Luke Genova was two for five and Rigbsy Duncan was two for three with an RBI.

The Sailors play host to Paramount in a tournament game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Estancia 11, Santiago 4

Freshman Brian Rodriguez pitched five innings and earned the win in the Eagles’ home opener in the Orange County Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Rodriguez, who struck out three and allowed one earned run, also went one for three with two runs batted in.

Aaron Boaitey was one for three with three RBIs and Connor Brown was one for two with an RBI, a double and two runs.

Estancia’s next tournament game is at Century on Saturday at 11 a.m.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Costa Mesa def. Pacifica

GARDEN GROVE — Junior opposite Mason Tufuga recorded 26 kills, six service aces and four blocks in the Mustangs’ 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 nonleague sweep on the road on Thursday.

Coby Pham had 20 assists and Steven Vu contributed six kills and four aces.

The Mustangs (2-0) open with Century at the Tustin Tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Estancia def. Segerstrom

SANTA ANA — Josh Griffith and Kaena McReynolds led the Eagles during a 25-22, 25-19, 28-26 nonleague sweep on the road Wednesday.

Estancia is 1-1 on the season.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

La Quinta 100, Estancia 70

Sophomore Jason Chesemore won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events for the Eagles in Thursday’s nonleague meet at Estancia High.

Chsesmore touched in 2 minutes, 3.87 seconds to win the 200 free, and 53.24 to win the 100 free.

Freshman Cobi White was also a double-winner in the 200 individual medley (2:16.41) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.31), while Kent Lim won the 50 free in 25.30.

Chris DeFrenza, White, Lim and Chesemore won the medley relay in 1:52.42.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 12, Laguna Beach 6

LAGUNA BEACH — Reese Stalder didn’t drop a game at No. 1 singles for the Sailors in Thursday’s nonleague match.

David Lee dropped just two games at No. 2 singles for the Sailors (2-0).

Newport Harbor also beat Mater Dei, 18-0, on Tuesday. Lee swept at No. 2 singles, while David Schaefer and Andy Myers swept at No. 1 doubles.

Newport Harbor plays at Estancia on Monday.

Santa Margarita 9, Sage Hill 9

(Santa Margarita wins on games, 80-71)

Adam Langevin swept in singles for the Lightning in Thursday’s nonleague match at The Tennis Club.

Kenan Torlic and Omead Moini each won twice in singles for the Lightning (0-2), who were battling a CIF Southern Section Division 2 opponent in Santa Margarita (4-1).

The teams were tied 3-3 after the first round and 6-6 after the second round.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 14, Downey 4

Katie Hendrix had three goals, an assist and two draws won in the Sailors’ nonleague game Thursday.

Mia Bagiu led a Newport Harbor defense that held Downey to 33% shooting.

Newport Harbor (2-0) next plays Saturday at the Rose Bowl Jamboree.
