College Roundup: UCI men’s golf wins Del Walker Collegiate

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine senior Pete Fernandez was medalist to lead the Anteaters to the team title in the event completed Tuesday at Virginia Country Club.

Fernandez shot eight-under-par 202 over 54 holes, including a seven-under 63 on Monday. He topped the field by six shots.

UCI was nine shots better than second-place Campbell, in the 11-team event.

UCI freshman Jonathan Young was eighth (211), while junior Jacob Schulze (38th at 219), and freshman David Kim (47th at 222) also spearheaded the ‘Eaters.

It was UCI’s first tournament title since winning the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate in September, 2013.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. USC

LOS ANGELES — The No.3-ranked Anteaters rallied for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win over No. 7 USC, 20-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-13.

Middle blocker Andrew Benz had a career high 11 kills to go with a team-high four block assists for UCI (17-3, 12-2 in MPSF), which won its eighth straight match.

USC drops its fourth straight and goes to 9-5 overall and 8-5 in the MPSF.

Opposite Zack La Cavera and outside hitter Tamir Hershko led all players with 18 kills, while libero Michael Brinkley recorded a season-high 17 digs. Middle blocker Jason Agopian added seven kills and three block assists and setter Michael Saeta, the MPSF Player of the Week, had 51 set assists, five digs and three block assists. Outside hitter Travis Woloson was a spark off the bench, recording six kills and six digs.

USC drops its fourth straight and goes to 9-5, 8-5.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Santa Barbara 54, UC Irvine 51

SANTA BARBARA — Senior Will Davis had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game late Saturday night.

UCI (17-11, 10-4 in conference) was two for 10 from three-point range.

UCSB (16-12, 9-5) pulled within one game of the second-place Anteaters, with two Big West games remaining.

UCI plays host to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday at 7 p.m. and completes the regular season on Saturday at first-place UC Davis.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Pacific 3

Ali and Kat Facey earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point and lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference match Sunday.

Both Facey sisters won in singles, as did UCI’s Vivien Dvali, while Sarah Gong and Arisha Ladhani combined for a 6-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles for the winners (8-3).

UCI plays host to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

Doubleheader

UCI defeated Northern Arizona, 7-0, and Boston College, 5-2, in a pair of nonconference matches on Sunday.

The romp over NAU was at Newport Beach Tennis Club and included dominant singles wins by Nico Mertens and Rafael Davidian in the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, respectively.

Davidian won in singles and doubles against Boston College at the Palisades Tennis Club to lift UCI (6-8).

Boston College is 4-5.

NAU is 2-6.
