Lightning Invitational

Newport Harbor High won the tournament for the third straight year, going undefeated in the round-robin format Friday and Saturday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Newport Harbor beat Canyon, 6-3, St. Ignatuis, 5-4, host Sage Hill, 5-4, and St. Margaret’s, 7-2.

TCU-bound senior Reese Stalder went undefeated in singles and doubles play for Newport Harbor and earned the tournament singles and doubles MVP awards, sharing the doubles MVP laurels with teammate David Lee.

Ryan Young, David Schaefer and Gavin Leonard were also all-tournament team selections for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor 5, Esperanza 2

Esperanza 9, Newport Harbor 6

ANAHEIM — Senior Liam Ogburn struck out seven in six innings, earning the win in the first game of the Sailors’ nonleague doubleheader at Esperanza on Saturday.

Luke Genova had a triple and drove in a run in the season-opening win for Newport Harbor (1-1), before going three for four with a solo home run in the second game.

Logan Mahaffy went a combined four for seven and doubled twice.

The Sailors open play in the Newport Elks Tournament at Laguna Beach on Thursday at 3 p.m. Newport Harbor is in the Foothill Division.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Eagle Invitational

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Newport Harbor’s junior Rachelle A La Torre won the discus throw with a personal-best heave of 133 feet 3 inches and she finished second in the shotput with a person-best throw of 40-1 at Santa Margarita on Saturday.

Emily Bacon placed second in the mile in 5 minutes 29.40 seconds.

Bacon, Kendal Marking, Lauren Loucks and Erin Barth led Newport Harbor to a third-place showing in the distance medley relay in 13:22.70.

Newport Harbor competes in the Battle of the Bay rivalry dual meet at Corona del Mar on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Sophomore Ryan Fegan won the pole vault event with an 11-foot 6-inch clearance for Newport, which had Kyle Fegan (11-0) and Charlie Crook (10-0) take second and third, respectively, at Santa Margarita on Saturday.

Newport Harbor’s distance medley relay of Sean Arnold, Jack McKasson, Erik Herrera and Conner DiPaolo placed second in 11 minutes 32.73 seconds.

The Sailors travel to Corona del Mar for Wednesday’s Battle of the Bay rivalry dual meet at 3 p.m.
