College Roundup: Davis leads UCI to win at Cal Poly

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 63, Cal Poly 56

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Senior forward Will Davis II scored a season-high 24 points and added nine rebounds for the Anteaters in a Big West Conference game Thursday night.

Davis was 12 of 15 from the field as the Anteaters improved to 17-10 overall and 10-3 in the Big West. With the victory, UCI closed to within one game of first-place UC Davis, which lost, 74-60, at UC Santa Barbara.

Mamadou Ndiaye, the Anteaters’ 7-6 sophomore center, returned to action after missing the last 10 games with a foot injury and had 11 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Luke Nelson added 10 points and seven assists.

Cal Poly is 13-13, 6-8.

The Anteaters play at UC Santa Barbara Saturday night at 9 in a game that will be carried on ESPN2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 58, UC Santa Barbara 46

IRVINE — Irene Chavez knocked down five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game at the Bren Events Center Thursday.

The Anteaters go to 6-22 overall and 3-10 in the Big West, two games ahead of UCSB (1-25, 1-12) with three games remaining for the final spot in the Big West Tournament.

Forward Mokun Fajemisin was one board shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds for UCI (6-22, 3-10 in conference). She swatted a career-high five blocks and moved in to fifth in the UCI season block list (52) and sixth in the career record book (73), climbing over UCI assistant coach Lauren (Yadon) Bowie.

Shereen Sutherland added 11 points and six rebounds, while guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton matched her career-high with nine assists and forward Methlyn Onogomuho had eight rebounds to go with six points.

UCSB is 1-25, 1-12.

UCI will play host to Cal Poly Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bren Events Center. Saturday is UCI’s annual Think Pink game to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. San Diego Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore Nick Amado had 12 kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-22 win, their fourth straight, Wednesday.

Sophomore Steven Duhoux (Newport Harbor) had 43 assists and four aces., while freshman Kama Paio had 10 kills for OCC (4-3).

The Pirates play host to rival Golden West Friday at 6 p.m.
