College Roundup: UCI falls to Fresno State

FRESNO — The UC Irvine baseball team suffered its second straight loss to open the season after Fresno State earned a 7-5 victory and won the three-game-series Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored six runs in the seventh inning to rally from a 5-1 deficit.

Andrew Martinez went three for five with three runs batted in and two runs scored for the Anteaters (0-2). Mikey Duarte went two for five with one run to add to UCI’s 10-hit attack.

Fresno State also had 10 hits.

The teams close out the series Sunday.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 8, Long Beach 1

LONG BEACH — Casey Costello pitched seven shutout innings to lead the visiting Pirates in the nonconference game Saturday.

Costello struck out seven, allowed three hits and walked none to improve to 3-0 for OCC, which is now 7-4.

Jeff Nellis was two for ofur with three runs scored and Stefan Panayiotou was two for five win one run batted in to pace the Pirates’ eight-hit attack.

Long Beach is 1-5.

Doubleheader

Paul Keating had four hits and three runs batted in to help lead Vanguard to a 12-7 win and a 4-2 victory over San Diego Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Brandon Sandoval went two for five with three RBIs and two runs, while Brock Eissman went two for four with two RBIs in the first game for the Lions (12-3, 9-3 in conference).

San Diego Christian is 3-13, 2-13.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Pepperdine

Four Anteaters recorded kills in double-figures as No. 5 UC Irvine upended No. 4 Pepperdine, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 at the Bren Center Saturday.

With the win, UCI moves in to a tie with USC and BYU atop the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings with an 8-2 record. The Anteaters improve to 13-3 overall and Pepperdine goes to 11-2.

Outside hitters Tamir Hershko and Kyle Russell led UCI with 18 kills, while middle blocker Jason Agopian pounded a career-high 13 kills and a team-high six block assists. Opposite Zack La Cavera added 10 kills and two aces plus six digs and middle blocker Andrew Benz had six kills and three block assists. Libero Michael Brinkley totaled a season-high 15 digs and five assists. Setter Michael Saeta notched 49 set assists, five digs and two block assists in the win.

UCI will travel to Stanford Friday for a 7 p.m. match in Maples Pavilion.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 76, UC Riverside 72 (OT)

Sophomore Mokun Fajemisin had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had 13 points and four assists, while Shareen Sutherland added 11 points and seven rebounds and Methlyn Onogomuho chipped in 10 points and seven boards for UCI (5-20, 2-9 in conference).

UC Riverside is 15-10, 6-5.

Vanguard 90, San Diego Christian 35

Riley Holsinger scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Amber Alexander added 17 points and 12 rebounds, Samantha Doucette scored 12 points and Maya Kennedy had 11 points for Vanguard (18-5, 10-3 in conference).

San Diego Christian is 8-17, 4-9.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 66, San Diego Christian 60

Zach Allmon scored 18 points to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Keith Mason (12 rebounds) and DeAngelo Jones scored 12 points each, while Chris Gorman added 11 points for Vanguard (15-11, 7-6 in conference).

San Diego Christian is 5-16, 0-13.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Taylor Wilson had six hits, one run batted in and two runs scored to help lead Vanguard to 2-1 and 9-1 nonconference wins over Holy Names Saturday.

Brittney Boggs (one hit), Shelby Kuryllo (three hits) and Breanne Gomez (two hits) had two RBIs each for Vanguard 9-1) in the 9-1 victory.

Holy Names is 0-5.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 5, Azusa Pacific 4

Stefan Kilchhofer, Fabio Silva and Roger Muri won in singles to help the No. 4-ranked Lions edges the No. 12-ranked Cougars Saturday.

Kilchhofer scored a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2 win over Jan Meyer at No. 1 singles.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Peg Barnard Invitational

STANFORD — UC Irvine sophomore Kaley In shot a career-best two-under-par 69 and is tied for second after the first day of the event at Stanford Golf Course.

In is three shots behind leader Paige Lee of UC Davis.

UCI is 10th in the 12-team field with a team total of 304, 21 shots off the lead.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

New Mexico meet

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. — UC Irvine’s 1,600 relay finished 12th to highlight the Anteaters at the Don Kirby Elite and Open meet on Saturday.

The quartet of Kaulyn Lee-McNeill, Megan George, Tyra Jones and Simone Buchanan posted a time of 3 minutes, 52.76 seconds.
