Taylor McKnight singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh and Marshall McKinnon pitched three scoreless relief innings to pace the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.
Brandon Sandoval was two for three with one run batted in and one stolen base to lead Vanguard’s six-hit attack.
McKinnon allowed two hits and struck out three to earn the victory.
Paul Keating, who tripled and scored in the winning rally, was one for two and scored twice for the Lions (10-5, 7-3 in conference).
San Diego Christian is 3-11, 2-9.

FRESNO — All-American closer Sam Moore gave up a run on three hits in the ninth inning to take the loss for the second straight year in the season opener against the Bulldogs on Friday.
With two outs and a runner on first, Moore hit a batter, then surrendered an infield single and the game-winning single with the bases loaded.
Freshman Keston Hiura hit a two-run home run for UCI, for which junior shortstop Mikey Duarte was three for four.

Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University swept the nonconference games Friday against Embry Riddle, winning the first game, 16-0, then adding a 5-1 triumph.
Brittney Boggs was two for four with two runs batted in and two runs in the opener, in which Shelby Kuryllo was two for three with a three-run home run and four RBIs.
Taylor Wilson and Kimberlee Estes had two hits apiece and Breanne Gomez had two runs and two RBIs in the five-inning blowout shortened by the mercy rule.
Rachel Stalford (four innings) and Emily Russell combined on the shutout.
Boggs was two for three and Haley Croce drove in three in Game 2, in which Shelby Ross allowed four hits and struck out eight in a seven-inning complete game.
Vanguard is 7-1.
Embry Riddle is 0-8.

Orange Coast def. Santa Barbara
Nick Amado had 16 kills and six blocks to lead the Pirates to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 nonconference win Friday night.
Adrian Faitalia chipped in 11 kills and Steven Duhoux dished out 38 assists for OCC (2-3).
Santa Barbara is 4-2.
The Pirates will hit the road for a pair of matches before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday, Feb. 27 against Golden West, beginning at 6 p.m.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — UC Irvine’s Marthie Ponty finished eighth in the mile run with a time of 5:36.51 as teammates Courtney Sharar placed ninth (5:39.91), Hannah Ruby 10th (5:40.07), Makenna McGrann 11th (5:51.14) and Pearl Law 12th (5:55.53) Friday.
Marie Brashears was 14th in the 600 meters in 1:39.46 and Aliya Shah finished 17th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:37.07.
In the 400 meters, Simone Buchanan placed 26th overall in 58.03, Kaulyn Lee-McNeill was 39th (59.40), Lily Trinh 44th (60.06), Brenna McNulty 53rd (61.30) and Paige Bushnell 54th (61.44).
Madelyn Sando cleared 5-2 ½ in the high jump to finish 35th.
Persis William-Mensah placed 55th overall in the 200 meters with a time of 25.53.
The meet concludes Saturday with competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. (MST).
