BASEBALL

Orange Coast 6, Long Beach 5

LONG BEACH — Sophomore right fielder Tommy Bell went four for five and drove in two runs to help the visiting Pirates prevail in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Stefan Panayiotou and Jack Kruger both had two hits and one RBI for the winners (6-3), who had 14 hits.

Andrew Frank earned the win in relief and James McClellan got the final four outs to post his first save.

Long Beach fell to 0-4.

OCC plays host to College of the Desert on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Cal State San Marcos 8, Vanguard 7

SAN MARCOS — Justin Vega and Brett Collins combined for six hits and five runs batted in, but it wasn’t enough for the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Collins was three for five with four RBIs, while Vega was three for four with one RBI and two runs scored for Vanguard, which rallied from a 7-0 deficit to tie, but allowed the game-winning run in the seventh inning.

Vanguard (9-5) had nine hits, two fewer than the Cougars (3-4).

The Lions play host to San Diego Christian on Friday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF

Barona Collegiate Cup

LAKESIDE, Calif. — UC Irvine tied for fourth among 13 schools at the two-day event completed Tuesday at Barona Creek Golf Club.

Senior Pete Fernandez placed 11th with a five-under-par total of 211 for 54 holes to lead the Anteaters, whose team score was seven-under 857.

San Diego State (833) won the team crown.

Also shining for UCI were Bryan Shin (17th at 214) and Jacob Schulze (24th at 216).

UCI competes in the Jones Invitational, Feb. 23-24, at Valencia Country Club.

WOMEN’S GOLF

The Gold Rush

SEAL BEACH — UC Irvine sophomore Kaley In finished 16th with a three-round total of 228 in the 54-hole event completed Tuesday at Old Ranch Country Club.

Sophomore Samantha Chan was 36th at 233 as UCI wound up ninth among 11 teams, 58 strokes behind victorious Long Beach State.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC San Diego tournament

LA JOLLA — No. 6-ranked UC Irvine was defeated, 10-5, by No. 3-ranked USC in the championship game on Sunday at UCSD.

UCI (5-3) had five players score once, while Stephanie Haralabidis, a sophomore out of Corona del Mar High, led the winners (4-0) with five goals.

UCI defeated No. 5-ranked Arizona State, 10-9, in two overtimes in the semifinal on Saturday.

McKenna Mitchell had four goals to lead the ‘Eaters against the Sun Devils.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 49, William Jessup 35

ROCKLIN — Junior Amber Alexander had 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Junior Riley Holsinger had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and two steals for the No. 9-ranked Lions, who shot just 28.4% from the field, but held the Warriors to 26.4% field-goal shooting.

Vanguard (16-5, 8-3 in conference) moved into sole possession of second place, two games behind Concordia with five conference games left in the regular season.

William Jessup fell to 2-21, 1-11.

The Lions play host to Arizona Christian on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 67, William Jessup 66

ROCKLIN — Senior guard Chris Gorman had 25 points and senior guard John Staats made a game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left to lift the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Zach Allmon had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Myles Smith chipped in 10 points and five boards for the winners (14-10, 6-5 in conference).

Staats, who was zero for three from three-point range before connecting to erase a two-point deficit, finished with five points.

William Jessup fell to 12-13, 3-9.

Vanguard, which sits in fifth place with five conference regular-season games remaining, plays host to Arizona Christian on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. No. 10-ranked Arizona Christian (20-5, 9-2) shares first place with No. 2-ranked Hope International and No. 8-ranked Concordia.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Santa Monica def. Orange Coast

SANTA MONICA — Nick Amado had 13 kills and six blocks to lead the visiting Pirates, who were bested, 25-17, 27-25, 23-25, 25-16, in the nonconference match Friday.

Steven Duhoux had 28 assists for OCC (0-3).

Santa Monica improved to 2-0.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, UC Santa Barbara 3

Sebastian Heim, Nico Mertens and Shuhei Shibahara earned straight-set singles victories to propel the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference opener on Saturday at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Heim won in the No. 1 spot, Mertens at No. 2 and Shibahara at No. 4, while Rafael Davidson won in three sets at No. 6 singles for UCI (3-6).

UCSB fell to 2-4.

Vanguard 8, Concordia 1

Fabio Silva won at No. 1 singles to lead a sweep in singles in the lineup for the No. 4-ranked Lions at Costa Mesa Tennis Center Tuesday.

Vanguard improved to 5-0.

Concordia, ranked No. 11, is 3-2.

Orange Coast 9, El Camino 0

TORRANCE — Elmer Van Butselaar won at No. 2 singles, 6-2 6-0, for the Pirates on Tuesday.

Darren Dinh won at No. 4 singles, 6-0 6-3 for OCC (4-0).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 5, Concordia 4

Ashley Wao-Udin, Brooke Ferslov-Jensen and Nataliya Yamkova earned wins in singles for the No. 4-ranked Lions Tuesday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Sarah Edwards and Michaele Sullivan won at No. 1 doubles, and Fersolv-Jensen and Wao-Udin won at No. 2 doubles for Vanguard (5-0).

Concordia, ranked No. 11 in the nation, dropped to 3-2.
