Johnston out for Estancia

For the Estancia High boys’ basketball team to prevent Costa Mesa from claiming the Battle for the Bell rivalry for a fourth straight season, the Eagles will have to do it without their leading scorer.

Gunnar Johnston will miss the Eagles’ Orange Coast League game at Costa Mesa on Friday at 7 p.m., and the rest of the season after the senior broke his left ankle during practice on Tuesday, Eagles Coach Xavier Castellano said.

The Eagles played without Johnston in their 72-40 setback at Laguna Beach on Wednesday. Three league contests remain for Estancia (8-14, 2-5 in league), which is in fourth place, three games back of Calvary Chapel and Laguna Beach, which share second place.

The top three teams in league earn automatic CIF Southern Section playoff berths.

Costa Mesa (8-15, 1-6) dropped the first game at Estancia, 54-42. If they top Estancia by at least 13 points, the Mustangs are Costa Mesa City champions once again.
