High School Roundup: NHHS girls’ water polo clinches league title

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 12, Fountain Valley 5

The Sailors clinched at least a share of the Sunset League title Wednesday night at Newport Harbor High.

Katie Kearns had three goals and two assists for the Sailors (14-5, 4-0 in league), while Chanel Schilling (two steals), Ellie Reid and Kate Yasko (one assist) each scored twice. Kate Pipkin, Isabel Leveque and Carlee Kapana also scored.

Kapana (three saves), Maddy Kanzler (five saves) and Schilling (four saves) split time in goal for Newport Harbor, which begins play at the Irvine Southern California Championships tournament on Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 46, Marina 39

McKenna Izzi scored 20 points to lead the Sailors to their first win in the Sunset League in four years Wednesday.

Kendra Mungia added eight points and 12 rebounds.

Newport Harbor trailed most of the game, including a 11-0 run by Marina to start the game. It was until the 4th quarter that the Sailors took the lead and held onto it with aggressive defensive and smart offensive, staying composed into the last minutes while knocking down their free throws to seal the win.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 3, Marina 1

Alan Alcantara scored a goal and recorded an assist for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Wednesday.

Domenic Schetter scored first for Newport Harbor (9-9-3, 3-5-0 in league), while Hugo Enriquez also scored and Marlon Nava added an assist.

Goalies Victor Negrete made five saves and Devon Henderson made three.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Marina 55, Newport Harbor 47

Chase Davis scored 14 points to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Garrett Davis added nine points and Joey Faris finished with eight points for Newport Harbor (3-4 in league), which plays host to Huntington Beach on Friday, senior night.
