Football: Newport Harbor’s Shaw commits to Chicago
Newport Harbor High senior Trevor Shaw has committed to play football at the University of Chicago, his father, Robert, said in a text on Friday.
Shaw, who played fullback and defensive tackle, earned first-team All-Sunset League and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team honors after finishing with 36 tackles and two sacks this past season. He also rushed for three touchdowns, the biggest coming on the last play in a Sunset League finale in which Shaw’s one-yard touchdown with no time left on the clock lifted the Sailors to a 34-33 win against Fountain Valley to secure a berth into the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division playoffs.
Chicago, an NCAA Division III program, won the University Athletic Assn. title last season. The Maroons finished 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.
