College Roundup: VU women’s basketball improves to 13-4

Vanguard 70, Cal State University San Marcos 52

Amber Alexander scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Lions in the nonconference game on Tuesday.

Samantha Doucette scored 14 points and Riley Holsinger had 12 points and nine rebounds each for Vanguard (13-4)

Vanguard led 29-19 at the half.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal Baptist

Senior Zack La Cavera tied his career-high with 19 kills to lead the No. 3-ranked Anteaters to a 25-13, 30-28, 22-25, 25-14 win at the Bren Events Center Tuesday.

UCI extends its winning streak to six as the Anteaters improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Cal Baptist is 2-4 on the year and 0-3 in the MPSF.

La Cavera hit .457 (19-3-35) and recorded six digs and five block assists. Outside hitter Tamir Hershko had 17 kills to extend his streak of kills in double-figures to seven. Middle blocker Jason Agopian had a career-high 11 kills and five total blocks while Travis Woloson sparked UCI with a season-high seven kills. Setter Michael Saeta totaled a season-high 52 set assists and tied his career-high with five aces.

The Anteaters play host to No. 5 USC Friday at 7 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
