College Roundup: Vanguard baseball opens with sweep

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept a pair from Antelope Valley to open the season Saturday.

The Lions won the first game, 5-3, then capped the sweep with a 3-0 win in seven innings.

Four pitchers combined for the Game 2 shutout, with starter Sean Isaac allowing one hit in four innings to earn the win.

Cole McMath was two for two and Jose Rojas was two for four with a run batted in in the second game, in which Vanguard had six of the nine hits in the contest.

Brandon Sandoval was two for two with two runs batted in and one run scored in the opener, in which Taylor McKnight (one RBI) and Brock Eissman were both two for four.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Long Beach State

LONG BEACH — Kyle Russell had 13 kills, while Tamir Hershko added 11 and Zack La Cavera had 10 to help the visiting No. 6-ranked Anteaters earn a 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of the No. 11-ranked 49ers in UCI’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Saturday.

UCI is 5-1, 1-0 in conference. Long Beach is 4-1, 1-1.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 60, Biola 47

DeAngelo Jones led the host Lions with 15 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Jones made three of four three-point attempts to help Vanguard (12-8, 4-3 in conference) shoot 45.4% from threedom (10 for 22).

Keith Mason added 10 points and five rebounds for the winners.

Biola is 13-7, 1-5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 68, Biola 51

Samantha Doucette had 25 points and Amber Alexander posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for the host, No. 13-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Saturday.

Riley Holsinger chipped in 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Maya Kennedy had six assists to go with her four points, with just one turnover.

Vanguard is 12-4, 5-2 in conference.

Biola is 12-8, 4-2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7,

UC San Diego 0

Four Anteaters won in singles and doubles to help the hosts win their season opener Saturday.

Ali Facey and Kat Facey won in singles, then teamed in doubles to earn a victory, as did UCI’s Mazy Watrous and Vivien Dvali.

Dvali produced a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles, and teamed with Watrous to post a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Ali Facey and No. 5 doubles partner Shannon Theisen posted a 6-0, 6-1 win.

MEN’S TENNIS

Arizona Kickoff Classic

Tucson, Ariz. — UC Irvine defeated Arizona, 4-2, after falling to New Mexico, 4-2, in the second day of the three-day event that concludes on Monday.

Nico Mertens and Sebastian Heim earned singles triumphs in both matches to pace UCI (2-2).

Mertens played both matches at No. 1 singles, while Heim was in the No. 2 spot against Arizona and in the No. 3 hole against New Mexico.

Jonathan Hammel (No. 5) and Justin Agbayani (No. 6) added singles wins against Arizona.
