High School Roundup: Hefner leads CMHS to third

Costa Mesa 72, Yucca Valley 43

TEMECULA — Nick Hefner scored 26 points to lead the Mustangs to a third-place finish in the Linfield Cage Classic Friday at Linfield Christian.

Sean Comer added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for Costa Mesa (9-5).

Hefner and Nick Dawson were named to the all-tournament team.

The Mustangs play host to Garden Grove Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Newport Harbor 33, Costa Mesa 24

COSTA MESA — Cierra Haas came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight rebounds for the Sailors in a consolation game of the Costa Mesa tournament Friday.

Haas replaced starting forward Halle McClain, who left the game for personal reasons.

Newport Harbor (6-8) was also without starting point guard Kirsten Rohan, who was away on a vacation trip.

The Sailors competed with seven players.

Kasey Thompson had 10 points, 14 rebounds and three assists, while Jennifer Lopez contributed seven points for Newport Harbor (6-8).

The Sailors lost to Costa Mesa, 44-30, Dec. 22 in the Mustangs’ gym.

Newport Harbor will play host to Back Bay rival Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay Monday at 7 p.m.

Rachel Witter led the Mustangs with eight points and six steals.

Costa Mesa plays host to Northwood Thursday at 7 p.m.
