Vanguard 76, Gordon (Mass.) 65COSTA MESA — Chris Raybon had a game-high 17 points for the Lions in their Bill Reynolds Holiday Classic opener Thursday night at The Pit.
Billy Thompson added 10 points and nine rebounds for Vanguard (8-4). Cameron Nettles also scored 10 points, while Chris Kupets had eight points and eight assists.
David Dempsey led Gordon (3-4) with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
The Lions play their second and final tournament game Friday at 5 p.m., against Vancouver Island.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Avila (Mo.) 71, Vanguard 49
LA MIRADA — T.J. Goddard and Chelsea Alfafara had nine points each for the Lions, who were upset in the Biola Holiday Classic game Thursday at Biola University.
Alison Drennan added seven points for Vanguard (7-2), ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. Vanguard shot just 31.5% from the field compared to 46.3% for Avila, and the Lions were also out-rebounded, 42-24.
Unranked Avila (9-5) outscored Vanguard, 48-26, in the second half after the score was tied at halftime. Brittany Townsend led Avila with a game-high 15 points.
The Lions conclude tournament play against the University of British Columbia on Friday at 3 p.m. at Biola.

Orange Coast 55, Los Angeles Pierce 52
VENTURA — Ashley Engeln scored 17 points for the Pirates in a second-round consolation game of the Ventura tournament Thursday.
Michelle Angel had 14 points and Anna Bartel had 10 points for Orange Coast (8-8), which plays in a consolation game Friday at 2 p.m.

NORTHRIDGE — Jasmine Bernard scored a team-high 12 points to go with eight rebounds for the Anteaters in their Big West Conference opener Thursday.
UCI (4-9, 0-1 in conference) committed a season-high 33 turnovers and lost its fourth straight game.
Junior forward Jazmyne White had a season- and game-high 13 rebounds to go with four points, three assists and two blocks for UCI. Junior guard Anete Klintsone added nine points and five rebounds, while senior guard Kiara Belen totaled seven points and five rebounds.
Cal State Northridge is 6-7, 1-0.
UC Irvine will travel to Long Beach State Saturday for a 1 p.m. Big West game at the Walter Pyramid.

UC Irvine def. Brandon
IRVINE — Jeremy Dejno had 14 points to lead the Anteaters to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 exhibition win Thursday at Crawford Court.
Dan McDonnell had nine points, Scott Kevorken had eight points and Carson Clark had seven points.
UCI will play host to the University of Alberta in another exhibition match on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Crawford Court. Admission is free.
