CdM’s Trush honored as water polo MVP

Corona del Mar High senior Jack Trush has been named Pacific Coast League MVP after helping the CdM boys’ water polo team win league for the 16th straight year.

Trush is joined on the first team all-league team by senior goalkeeper Nigel Bress and seniors Ashton Jajonie and Garrett Spruth.

Trush, a defender and co-captain, was fourth on the Sea Kings with 39 goals, despite missing nine games with a broken ankle. A repeat first-team all-league selection, Trush added 16 assists and 17 steals for CdM (24-6, 10-0 in league), helping the Sea Kings advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals. CdM lost to top-seeded eventual champion Harvard-Westlake, 13-2.

Jajonie, a senior co-captain, led CdM with 69 goals. He was third on the team with 32 assists and led the team with 53 steals. Spruth scored 49 goals, third on the squad, and added 20 assists and 28 steals.

Bress made 255 saves for the Sea Kings. He tied his season-high with 16 in a 10-9 Division 1 quarterfinal win over Long Beach Wilson. Bress also led the team with 46 assists.

CdM senior Patrick Ong earned second-team All-Pacific Coast League laurels.

Davison, Padden earn first-team accolades

Newport Harbor High seniors Clay Davison and Charlie Padden have each earned first-team All-Sunset League honors for boys’ water polo.

Davison, a senior captain and repeat first-team all-league selection, led the Sailors (10-17) with 71 goals. He helped Newport Harbor, which tied for second in league, return to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs after beating Los Alamitos in a play-in game for the third spot from the league, 17-4.

Davison then scored four goals, including the game-winner, as Newport Harbor upset Agoura on the road, 9-8, in the first round of the playoffs. The Sailors then fell to Mater Dei, 11-4, in the quarterfinals.

Padden tied for second on Newport Harbor with 30 goals. He scored five in the playoff-clinching win over Los Al.

Newport Harbor senior Jack Mooers and freshman Hannes Daube were second-team all-league selections. Each scored 30 goals this season to tie for second on the team.

Huntington Beach goalie Alex Wolf was named league MVP after helping the Oilers earn the league title.

Six locals on first team in OCL

Costa Mesa senior Matt Brown, juniors Ivan Shikhelman and Angel Rosado, as well as Sage Hill juniors Harry Miller and Chris Wan, and Estancia sophomore Jason Chesemore all earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ water polo.

Brown, the Mustangs’ team captain, led Costa Mesa (18-8, 4-1 in league) with 66 goals. He tied for second on the team with 33 assists, and was third with 32 steals. The Mustangs finished second in league to Laguna Beach and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, where they fell at Trabuco Hills, 12-8, in the first round.

Rosado, a transfer from Puerto Rico, was second on Costa Mesa with 62 goals. He had 20 assists and 25 steals.

Shikhelman, a goalie, had a league-best 295 saves for Mesa.

Miller and Wan were integral players for Sage Hill (6-9, 3-2 in league), which finished in third place in the league. The Lightning won at Alhambra, 14-5, in a Division 3 wild-card match before falling at Murrieta Valley, 13-3, in the first round.

Chesemore helped lead Estancia, which finished 11-15 and 2-3 in league, to fourth place. He was second on the team with 33 goals.

Each local school had two players earn second-team all-league status. Senior Quinn Smith and junior Jorge Rosado made the list for Mesa, as did senior Zachary Drobenko and freshman Zane Drobenko for Sage Hill, as well as senior goalie Jon Leal and sophomore Kyle Fitzgerald for Estancia.

Laguna Beach seniors Cade Baldridge and Jack Dodson shared the league MVP honors for the league champion Breakers.
