Briefs: Trio on first team
Orange Coast College freshman outside hitter Karlee Riggs, who led the state with 330 kills in the regular season, tops six Pirates named All-Orange Empire Conference in women’s volleyball.
Riggs, though just 5-foot-9, amassed 375 kills during the season to earn first-team recognition.
Freshman setter Allison Lumsden and freshman middle blocker Morgan Link also represent OCC on the first team.
Second-team honorees from OCC were freshmen Isabel Emrich, Andi Frisina and Dana Nicholson.
Riggs hit .317 during the regular season, during which she also collected 174 digs and 23 aces to help the Pirates finish 17-5. OCC was 11-3 in conference and finished second behind Golden West.
The Pirates were the No. 8 seed in the Southern California regionals. They defeated San Diego Mesa in the opening round, then lost in five games at No. 1-seeded Los Angeles Pierce on Saturday.
Lumsden had 572 regular-season assists, which ranked No. 3 in the conference. She also had 19 aces during the regular season.
The 6-2 Link had 123 regular-season kills, while posting a .359 hitting percentage. She had 19 solo blocks and 17 block assists during the regular season.
Frisina led OCC with 296 regular-season digs from her libero position.
Imrich and Nicholson were also valuable hitters for Coach Chuck Cutenese’s squad.

UCI’s Wise honored
UC Irvine sophomore Mitch Wise was named second-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in men’s water polo Tuesday.
Wise, a 6-foot, 190-pound driver, led the Anteaters in scoring with 70 goals this season and has 100 goals in two seasons.
UCI finished 17-12 and was fifth in the MPSF Tournament that completed Sunday.
UCI senior Trent Baxter, a driver who scored 55 goals this season, received honorable mention.
