Briefs: Pavlik collects crown

Former UC Irvine women’s volleyball standout Whitney Pavlik and her partner, Jenny Kropp, won the Huntington Beach Open to win the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series national championship Sunday near the Huntington Beach Pier.

Pavlik and Kropp, the No. 1 seeded team, defeated No. 4-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Rachel Scott, 21-14, 21-18, in Sunday’s final.

Pavlik and Kropp captured their sixth Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Series win of the season and will end their season in Thailand at the FIVB World Tour event, Oct. 23-28.

They split $18,000.

In the men’s tournament, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and Corona del Mar resident Sean Rosenthal finished second, falling in the title match to John Hyden and Sean Scott, 21-15, 21-12.

Gibb and Rosenthal were seeded No. 1 and Hyden and Scott were the No. 4-seeded entry.

Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer and partner Nick Lucero, the No. 2 seeded team, finished fifth.

The tournament ended a seven-year partnership for Gibb and Rosenthal, who competed in the London Olympic Games. Rosenthal will partner with Phil Dalhausser next year, while Gibb has yet to announce his new partner.

Kosakowski prevails

Daniel Kosakowski of Downey defeated Jeffrey Dadamo of Florida, 6-4, 7-5, Sunday to earn the Costa Mesa Pro Classic singles tennis title at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Kosakowski, 20, who advanced to the third round of qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Open, earned $1,300 for the win and saw his world ranking improve from No. 379 to No. 333.

Kosakowski, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in his only season at UCLA in 2011, was the No. 2 seed, while Dadamo, a former All-American at Texas A&M, was seeded No. 7.

Kosakowski has won two straight Pro Circuits Tour events, having topped the field the previous week in Claremont.

Nicholas Meister of Trabuco Canyon and Ryan Thacher of Studio City won the tournament’s men’s doubles crown on Saturday.

It was the second straight Costa Mesa Pro Classic doubles crown for Meister, a former All-American at UCLA.

Locals out of WBC

Former Corona del Mar High baseball standout Jake Lemmerman scored a run and stole a base, but Israel lost to Spain, 7-5, in the final of a four-team qualifying tournament for the World Baseball Classic on Sunday in Jupiter, Fla.

Lemmerman was hitless in two at-bats Sunday, a game in which teammate Ben Orloff, a former UC Irvine star, did not play.

Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College product Daniel Cooper, who represented Great Britain in a separate qualifying event in Germany, pitched 21/3 innings in the tournament. He allowed four hits, four runs (three earned), struck out two and walked one as Great Britain won one of three contests.
