High School Roundup: Sailors reach quarterfinals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High reached the quarterfinals of the tournament’s top division, but fell to Redondo Union, 25-20, 25-20, Saturday at Edison.

The Sailors (10-4) beat El Dorado, 25-26, 25-14, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Redondo will play against Mater Dei in the final on Monday at Edison.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sage Hill reached the first round of the championship bracket in the top division, where it lost to Redondo Union, 25-22, 25-17, Saturday at Edison.

Halland McKenna had eight kills and two aces and Kekai Whitford had six kills and two blocks for the Lightning (7-3). Sage Hill beat Los Osos, 25-22, 25-20, earlier Saturday to complete pool play.

McKenna had seven kills and seven digs and setter Maddy Abbott had 22 assists and four digs.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Grafton Weiss Memorial Tournament

Costa Mesa finished fourth in the tournament after wins over Tustin, 11-8, and Saddleback, 17-10, Saturday.

Nick Lewis scored five goals against Tustin and goalie James Rydjeski made 14 saves.

The second game was against league rival Saddleback. We won 17 -10.

Wyatt Ferris scored eight goals against Saddleback, while Deighton Tachiki-Urias scored two goals. Rydjeski had seven saves and five assists.

The Mustangs play at Estancia Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Dana Hills Coastal Championship

DANA POINT — Corona del Mar went 2-2 and finished 10th in the tournament Saturday.

The Sea Kings ended with a 7-1 loss to Iolani High of Hawaii. Freshman Siena Sharf earned the lone win, 8-2, at No. 5 singles.

CdM then beat Menlo on games, 43-38, after a 4-4 tie. The Sea Kings had lost to Menlo, 4-3, two weeks ago at the Fresno tournament.

Kimmia Naaseh and Taylor Fogarty won, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Riley Gerdau, Sophia Chen and Siena Sharf won to tie the match at 4-4.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Brentwood Invitational

BRENTWOOD — Dylan Thies earned second place in 16 minutes, 19 seconds to help Sage Hill take second Saturday.

Cameron Knollenberg was seventh in 16:48 and Chris Andrus was 11th in 17:18 for the Lightning.

Brentwood Invitational

BRENTWOOD — Sophia Witte finished 17th in 20:50 to help Sage Hill take third Saturday.

Brittany Andresso was 19th in 21:00 and Lilly Mora was 21st in 21:03 for the Lightning.

The Bishop’s 48, Sage Hill 13

LA JOLLA — The Lightning could not find its first win of the season and lost the nonleague road game Saturday night.

Sage Hill, which trailed, 34-7, at the half, is now 0-5.

The Lightning have been outscored 204-68.

The Bishop’s is 2-2.
