Briefs: Cutting For Carlos

The Costa Mesa High football team is planning for a special event Saturday to help raise funds for Carlos Vazquez, an incoming senior standout who was diagnosed with leukemia in June.

The footbal team will be conducting its annual Lift-A-Thon and BBQ at Costa Mesa with a meaningful morning event: “Hair Cutting For Carlos.”

In an effort to support Vazquez, the players are planning to shave their hair. The team will also have a few volunteer hair stylists to help with the cuts in the morning, that is open for the community. The haircuts, of mostly any style not just the buzz look, will be $20 each. The cost includes a breakfast burrito. The burritos will be sold for $5 each without the haircut. The money raised from “Hair Cutting For Carlos,” will help cover the cost of his hospital bills.

Following the Lift-A-Thon, a pot-luck style barbeque feast will take place.

Krugman takes 24th

Newport Harbor High senior-to-be Allie Krugman finished 24th in the pole vault at the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Sacramento Friday.

She cleared 9 feet, 10 inches. She said she did not do as well as she wanted. Her personal best is 11-1.

“I was grateful that I made it as far as I did,” said Krugman, who won the Western Zone title in June in Las Vegas. “I got to meet people from all over the country. It was just a great experience. I also know what to expect for next time.”
