High School Baseball All-League: Desguin earns first-team honors

Newport Harbor High senior shortstop Jordan Desguin earned first-team All-Sunset League laurels in baseball after Coach Patrick Murphy said Desguin finished with the second-best batting average (.413) in league play.

Desguin, who is bound for Florida State, was the better hitter for Newport Harbor (6-19, 2-13 in league). He hit .364 overall as a switch hitter. He finished with seven runs batted in, five doubles and one triple.

Desguin played in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase game between the Sunset League and Trinity League.

Sophomore pitcher Shaun Vetrovec received second-team recognition after recording half of the Sailors’ six wins. He went 3-4 with a 3.14 earned-run average.

Edison’s Timmy Lopes was the Sunset League MVP and Los Alamitos’ Jacob Nix was the Sunset League Pitcher of the Year.

CdM duo on first team

Corona del Mar High senior pitcher Andrew McCormack and senior catcher Brent Lawson made the first-team All-Pacific Coast League after leading the baseball team back to the CIF Southern Section postseason after the Sea Kings missed it in 2011.

McCormack and Lawson helped CdM (16-12, 8-7 in league) finish third in an ultra-competitive league and get out of the wild-card round of the Division 3 playoffs.

McCormack, a right-hander bound for Stanford, produced on the mound and in the batter’s box. He also made All-CIF Southern Section Division 3 team and started on the mound in the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 45th annual Orange County North-South All-Star Game for seniors at Glover Stadium and in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase between the Pacific Coast League and Freeway League.

McCormack went 8-3 with a 1.57 earned-run average, striking out 37 batters in 71 1/3 innings of work. He tossed five complete games, almost going the distance in half of his 11 starts.

As a hitter, McCormack, batted a team-best .375 and drove in 22 runs, tying him for first.

He had five doubles, drew 11 walks and only struck out a half dozen times in 95 plate appearances. He had .436 on-base percentage and .438 slugging percentage, both team bests.

Lawson, bound for Yale, led the Sea Kings with four home runs.

He drove in 20 runs with six doubles and one triple, scored 22 runs and was eight for eight in stolen-base attempts.

CdM junior third baseman Hunter Heckendorn made the second team.

Max Stone, a junior second baseman, was an honorable mention.

Beckman’s Garret Brown and University’s Jordan Scheftz shared the Pacific Coast League MVP award and Beckman’s James Kaprielian was the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year.

Trancoso makes first team again

Senior center fielder Alex Trancoso highlights one of a handful of Estancia High baseball players earning first-team All-Orange Coast League laurels after helping the Eagles contend for a league title this season.

The other four Estancia players on the first team are junior pitcher Steven Macias, senior catcher Brodie Pearce, junior shortstop Tyler Rios and junior right fielder Ben Beck. The Eagles finished one game out of first place.

Trancoso, a repeat first-team selection, led Estancia (17-9, 12-3 in league) to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs for the third straight season.

Trancoso put up impressive numbers during the regular season: a .448 batting average and .525 on-base percentage, 17 runs batted in, nine doubles, one triple, 25 runs scored and 13 for 13 in stolen-base attempts.

Trancoso, who plans to play at Irvine Valley College, also made the All-CIF Southern Section Division 4 team and played in the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 45th annual Orange County North-South All-Star Game for seniors at Glover Stadium.

Macias went 8-2 with a 1.54 earned-run average. He struck out 40 batters in 50 innings and tossed three complete games, including a shutout.

As a hitter, Macias batted .338 with 13 RBIs, three triples and two doubles.

Pearce hit .377 with 17 RBIs, six doubles and three triples. The catcher threw out 12 of 20 players attempting to steal a base on him.

Rios drove in a team-best 26 runs and had a .333 average with nine doubles. He swiped eight of nine of his stolen-base attempts.

Beck had a .364 average with 14 RBIs, 23 runs, three doubles and two triples. He led the team with 16 steals in 18 tries.

Estancia senior Andres Hernandez, a pitcher and second baseman, made the second team, along with Costa Mesa seniors Trace Curet and Nathan Alvis.

Calvary Chapel’s Wyatt Haccou was the Orange Coast League MVP and Laguna Beach’s Grant Wilhelm the Orange Coast League Pitcher of the Year.

Sage duo on first team

Sage Hill seniors Michael Yorita and Brandon Zelner were each named to the first-team All-Academy League in baseball.

The duo led the Lightning (12-12-1, 9-6 in league), an at-large entry into the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs, to a 12-2 wild-card win at Anza Hamilton.

Yorita, an infielder, ranked first on the team in batting average (.433), runs batted in (32) and doubles (11), on-base percentage (.505) and slugging percentage (.608).

Zelner, a center fielder, batted .418 with 18 RBIs, seven doubles, two triples and 30 runs. He posted a .557 slugging percentage and .489 on-base percentage.

Parker Reposa, a freshman pitcher and third baseman, and Kellen Ochi, a freshmen pitcher, infielder and catcher, made the second team.

Sophomore outfielder Brett Dunlavey was an honorable mention.

Sage Hill Coach Danny Gonzales was the Academy League Coach of the Year. The Lightning finished in fourth place in league.

Oxford’s Lucas Sardo was the Academy League MVP and Academy League Pitcher of the Year.
