Youth Scene: Roel wins title
Team Roel Construction won five straight playoff games to beat previously undefeated Stowell Construction to win the 2011 Pinto National Championship in the Newport Harbor Baseball Assn.
After trailing Wells Fargo, 3-2 in the fourth inning, Roel went on to win in extra innings eliminating Wells Fargo, 8-4 .
On Wednesday after trailing, 5-0 to Outback Steakhouse, Roel’s bats come alive scoring 10 unanswered runs. There were homeruns by Kyle Waterman, Rees Clasen and Gus Oeding.
On Friday, Roel avenged an earlier playoff loss to team Barkate Orthodontics, 10-5 .
In the first game of the championship Sunday, Team Roel Construction knew it had a mountain to climb knowing it had to beat an undefeated team Stowell Construction twice. Roel got off to an earlier lead and never looked back winning 6-3. Miles Mikkelsen, Cole Lavin, Travis O’Neil and Waterman did a great job pitching holding Stowell to three runs.
In the second game, Stowell Construction scored first on a shot by Trevor Muir to give Stowell an early lead. After Will Brown shut down team Stowell by striking two , Team Stowell took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Waterman hit a double to lead off the inning. Clasen hit an inside-the-par home run to win the game.
Defensive play by Grant Agamalian and key hitting by Eli Leithem and Aidan Kalinowski helped the team win in the playoffs.

Lightning’s title
The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s boys’ fourth-grade AAU team won the Big City Sports “Spring Slam Classic” May 1 in Orange County defeating Credo Basketball, YBS, BCS and IE Scorpions along the way.
The Lightning were led by the stellar play of Luke Chelf, Mason Melcer, Adam Flood and Sam Barela while Max Morris, Bryce Motal, Ford Fairon, Carter Wang, Peter Larsen and Kian Akhavan played key roles in all four wins.
The Lightning is coached by Scott Stucki.

Newport has big win
The Newport Beach Girls U11 Select team stunned previously undefeated Costa Mesa, 3-0, in a recent game.
Coaches Marco and Gerardo led their team to a decisive victory with stellar play all around.
Abby Blaine started the scoring and was soon joined by Maddie Baldikowski, the teams leading scorer, who scored twice in the game.
With Heidi Schubert’s incredible goalkeeping, and stingy defense played by Ali Cunningham and Gabby Valeriano, Costa Mesa never got going.
Claire Wadman’s strong all-around play, and the hustle from Olivia Cox, Evelyn Taylor and Annie Rankin helped cap off a beautifully played game.

Youth Flag Football
Newport-Mesa Friday Night Lights Flag Football League’s 20011 fall registration is open through May 31.
The fall Friday Night Lights Youth Flag Football League starts Sept. 9.
Each week there is one game on Friday night played at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex, games start at 4:30 p.m. and last one hour with the last game at 7:30 p.m.
There is one practice per week. The league has a nine-week season including playoffs and championship.
