Estancia High softball coach Marcus Franco resigned Monday, school Principal Kirk Bauermeister announced.

The Eagles finished 9-18, 4-6 in the Orange Coast League and did not make the CIF Southern Section playoffs in Franco’s only season at the helm.

Franco said he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Hammel gets award

UC Irvine senior Stephanie Hammel won the Southwest Region ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.

Hammel’s four-year career included a Big West Conference title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010.

She went 9-4 in singles in 2012 and had 40 career wins in singles and 27 in doubles.

Hammel becomes the third UCI women’s player to earn the honor, joining Tiffany Chang (2004) and Anna Bentzer (2005).

“Arthur Ashe exemplified excellence both on and off the field of competition in terms of courage, dignity, and grace, so we are very happy for Stephanie to receive an award of such distinction,” UCI Coach Mike Edles said.
