College Roundup: OCC baseball just misses on Super Regional

Southern California playoffs

SAN MARCOS — Orange Coast College began Saturday with a 5-2 win over Palomar, but then lost, 1-0, and missed on its bid to reach Super Regional round after losing a best-of-three regional in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California playoffs.

Cody Bruder went two for three with a run batted in to help OCC (23-16) with the 5-2 win that tied the series, 1-1. Anthony Virgen had two RBIs and Danny Jimenez went two for four.

The Pirates had four hits in the final elimination game when Palomar (26-12) scored in the second inning.

Evan Porcella was the hard-luck loser, pitching eight innings. He struck out four, walked three and gave up four hits and one run

UC Santa Barbara 5, UC Irvine 3

SANTA BARBARA — The Anteaters left 12 runners stranded and was unable to hold off starting pitcher Robby Nesovic in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Nesovic made the start and pitched five shutout innings before giving up a three-run home run in the sixth. However, batting in the five spot, Nesovic helped his own cause by going 3 for 3 with a home run and a run scored.

Scott Gottschling led UCI (29-14, 11-6 in conference) with three runs batted in, but the Anteaters were limited to five hits in the loss.

UCSB is 24-20, 9-8.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Heptathlon

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine freshman Melanie Speech finished 10th in the heptathlon that concluded Saturday at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships.

Speech compiled 4,395 points in the competition at the Northridge Track & Field Complex. This was her first heptathlon.

In Saturday’s three events, she recorded marks of 16-4 ¼ in the long jump and 125-7 in the javelin throw, and ran a time of 2:42.66 in the 800 meters. Her javelin mark topped the field.

Samantha Balentine of Hawai’i won the heptathlon with 5,060 points.

UCI competes in the Big West Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Northridge.
