NEWPORT COAST — Senior outside hitter Chris Zadra had 19 kills, 16 digs, five service aces and four blocks to help the Lightning move into sole possession of first place in the Academy League with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-19 victory on Thursday.

Sage Hill (17-10, 6-1 in league), ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 poll, is ahead of sixth-ranked Crean Lutheran in league.

Kent Kawaguchi recorded 48 assists, 12 kills, eight digs and five aces.

Jack Burgi had 15 kills and 11 digs.

Sage Hill 207, St. Margaret’s 207 (Sage wins on sixth player)

IRVINE — Sage Hill’s Ahmed Eltamami was the medalist after shooting a two-under-par 34 in the Academy League match Thursday at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course.

The Lightning’s sixth player Adam Wang (45) edged St. Margaret’s by three.

Michael Phan (41), Matt Marlin (42), Darren Chen (45) and Tanner Tremaine (45) also contributed to Sage Hill’s win.

The Lightning improved to 9-6, 5-1 in league and qualified for the postseason.

Newport Harbor 194, Marina 206

NEWPORT BEACH — Brad Tapfer earned medalist honors after shooting one-under-par 35 for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Thursday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Tyler Tashiro (38), Mason Moody (39), Carter Norris (41) and Landon Knight (41) also scored for Newport Harbor (11-7, 4-3 in league).

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 64, University 63

IRVINE — Ashlee Powers, Emily Glenn and Karlèh Wilson were double winners for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Powers won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes 27.1 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:38.9.

Glenn won the 100 hurdles (17.7) and 300 hurdles (50.5).

Wilson won the shot put (39-5 ½) and discus (117-9).

Victoria Rihm (long jump, 14-6), Katie Groke (200 in 26.9) and Kristen Rivera (800 in 2:25.9) were also winners for CdM.

Fountain Valley 96, Newport Harbor 26

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Paige Tennison won the 1,600 meters for the Sailors, finishing in 5 minutes, 7 seconds in the Sunset League meet Thursday at Newport Harbor High

Katelyn Mead won the 3,200 in 11:54.40, Samantha Yeager won the high jump by clearing 4-9 and Peri Howser won the pole vault (10-3) for the Sailors.

Kayla Bernard was second in the high jump (4-7) and Paloma Lamas was second in the shot put (30-9) for Newport Harbor, which is 0-5 in league.

Corona del Mar 17, Woodbridge 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Henry Gordon, Alec Adamson and Chaz Downing all swept in singles, giving up just six games in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday at CdM.

Dan Anastos and Zach Williams won, 6-1, 6-1, in doubles before being subbed out.

Corona del Mar (15-2, 6-1 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, travels to Santa Barbara on Saturday to play the No. 5 Dons. The match is scheduled for Tne Tennis Club of Santa Barbara at 11 a.m.

Los Alamitos 10, Newport Harbor 8

LOS ALAMITOS — Reese Stalder and Phillip Vu swept at No. 3 doubles for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Thursday.

Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers won two of three at No. 2 doubles for Newport Harbor (10-6, 5-3 in league).

Corona del Mar 102, University 25

IRVINE — Thomas Testini, Blake Meyers, Troy Bolus and Nick McGuiness won two events each for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Testini won the 100 meters in 11 seconds and the 200 in 22.9. Meyers won the 1,600 in 4:29.6 and the 3,200 in 10:43. Bolus won the 110 hurdles in 15.3 and the long jump (18-9).

McGuiness won the 300 hurdles in 40.1 and the high jump (6-0 ½).

Matt Hurst (400 in 53.8), Kyle Iverson (800 in 2:01.5) and Alex Imani (discus, 140-10) also won.

Fountain Valley 79, Newport Harbor 57

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Dane Palanjian was one of five individual winners for the Sailors in the Sunset League meet Thursday.

Palanjian won the 100 meters in 11.5. Titus Hasson won the 200 in 22.5. Fritz Howser won the pole vault with a personal-record clearance of 14 feet, 10 inches. Ethan Cochran won the disus (188-9) and Steve Michaelsen won the shot put (58-6).

Tala Teaupa, Hasson, Palanjian and Adam Yeomans won the 4x100 meter relay team in 44.5.

The Sailors finished 1-4 in the Sunset League regular season. The league prelims are April 27 at Huntington beach High.

Cochran, Michaelsen, along with Javier Venegas and Marty Taylor will compete in the throw events at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Saturday, when Fritz Howser, David Munoz and Christian Abbey will compete in the pole vault.

Jake Barber competes in the 3,200 Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays. The rest of the Newport Harbor athletes compete in the OC Championships at Mission Viejo High Saturday.
