Taylor wins discus with state’s top mark
MISSION VIEJO — In a span of three days, Newport Harbor senior Marty Taylor lost the state’s top mark in the shotput, only to gain the state’s top mark in the discus throw.
Taylor won the discus with a personal-best mark of 187 feet and five inches at the Trabuco Hills Invitational on Saturday. His previous best was 179-10, which he recorded three weeks ago at the Irvine Invitational.
Taylor also placed second in the shotput at Trabuco Hills. He finished behind the thrower, Temecula Great Oak’s Nick Ponzio, who also topped Taylor’s No. 1 shotput mark in the state during a Great Oak-Vista Murrieta dual meet on Thursday.
Ponzio’s 60-9 effort won the shotput at Trabuco Hills. Taylor heaved it 60-5, which is also a personal best.
On Thursday, Ponzio hit 60-11 1/4, which surpassed Taylor’s previous best mark of 60-1. Ponzio is ranked No. 2 in the country in the shotput and Taylor is fourth.
Taylor’s new mark in the discus ranks third in the nation, almost eight feet from the top spot.
