COSTA MESA — Senior pitcher P.J. Maloney tossed a three-hit shutout, complete game that came with five strikeouts for the Mustangs in their season-opener and a pool-play game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Orange County Division Friday.

Junior Trace Curet went two for two with two runs scored and junior A.J. Goldfarb was two for four with four runs batted in for Costa Mesa (1-0).

The Mustangs continue pool play today at 2 p.m., when they play host to Warren of Downey.

COSTA MESA — Pitcher Tyler De la Pena did not allow a hit in five scoreless innings, striking out five for the Eagles in their season-opener and a pool-play game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Orange County Division Friday.

Matt Carlyle scored three runs, stole two bases and doubled for Estancia (1-0). Victor Trujillo was two for three with two stolen bases, Brody Pearce was two for two with one stolen base and a walk and Tyler Rios doubled with two sacrifices, one run and one RBI.

The Eagles continue pool play at Century today at 2 p.m.

Foothill tournament

SANTA ANA — Sage Hill School went 1-2 in pool play of the 34-team tournament Friday at Foothill High.

The Lightning beat Saddleback, 21-25, 27-26,17-16. The first two games were capped at 27 and the third capped at 17. Junior outside hitter Chris Sadra had 11 kills, sophomore Kent Kawaguchi had seven kills and 13 digs and Nicky Bolous had 11 assists.

Sage Hill lost to Tustin, 25-22, 27-25, and fell to Mater Dei, 25-10, 25-18.
