College Roundup: Hillman’s grand slam highlights UCI win

UC Irvine 9, Bethune-Cookman 3

COMPTON — Drew Hillman blasted a grand slam in the first inning and was named Player of the Game to hel UCI improve to 6-0 in the MLB Urban Invitational contest Saturday.

It was the first home run of the season for UCI.

D.J. Crumlich and Jordan Fox each drove in two runs on one hit for the winners.

Brian Hernandez was two for three, while Jordan Leyland also drove in a run on one hit.

Sophomore starter Kyle Hooper pitched a career-high six innings, striking out four and yielding two earned runs on four hits while walking two.

Relievers Nick Hoover, Andy Lines and Phil Ferragamo combined for two hitless innings.

The Anteaters close out the MLB Urban Invitational today against Grambling State at 1 p.m. at UCI.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 83, UC Irvine 67

DAVIS — Freshman forward Jacquelyn Marshall led the Anteaters with a career-high 19 points in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Senior Jade Smith-Williams had 14 points, while sophomore Jazmyne White added 11 points and sophomore Tayler Champion scored 10 for UCI (15-12, 7-8 in conference).

UC Davis is 19-8, 8-6.

The Master’s 71, Vanguard 70

COSTA MESA — Senior Molly Pfohl led the Lions with 20 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Sarah Boyd had 18 points and nine assists, while Chelsea Alfafara added 13 points and Veronica Beavor scored 11 for Vanguard (16-10, 12-8) to end the regular season.

The No. 16-ranked Lions finish tied for fourth in the GSAC with Westmont and open the eight-team conference tournament as the No. 5 seed Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at No. 4-seeded and No. 23-ranked Westmont.

The Master’s is 17-10, 10-10.

MPSF Indoor Championships

SEATTLE — UC Irvine’s Alisa Misiaita (shot put) and Madeline Leduc (triple jump) each finished fifth Saturday.

Misiaita’s mark was 49 feet, nine inches, while Leduc leaped 40-0 1/2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 78, Vanguard 77 (OT)

COSTA MESA — Chris Raybon had 23 points in the Golden State Athletic Conference game to pace the host Lions in their season finale.

Vanguard finishes 6-22, 4-16, tied for ninth in the 11-team conference.

Vanguard senior Alex Chapman had 15 points and 17 rebounds in his final collegiate game, while senior Billy Thompson bowed out with 13 points.

There were 13 lead changes and the score was tied eight times.

The Master’s is 13-17, 6-14.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Azusa Pacific 5, Vanguard 4

COSTA MESA — The No. 4-ranked Lions won three singles matches against No. 7-ranked APU in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Kateryna Malakhova scored a 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 win at No. 2 singles for Vanguard (2-1, 2-1 in conference).

COSTA MESA — No. 4 singles player Radek Rosiak earned the lone win for the No. 7-ranked Lions in the Golden State Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Vanguard is 2-3, 1-2 in conference. APU is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA.
